Rock Star Music Video

Check it out!  Nice moves!  I'm testing out sending the video to Mrs. P. tonight.  If for some reason it doesn't work, we'll re-tape on Friday using a Flip Camera instead.  We'll start off right away in the morning either taping more parts or meet with Connecticut.

Loved the hard working students I saw during literacy time this afternoon!  Let's keep that same motivation and focus for the rest of our days together as a 5B Family, ok?!

Don't forget to get your parents to sign the Extra Credit slips.

Also, Wicked Readers:  Isabella and Tristan!

I'll know you checked the blog if you come in and finish taking the Week 1 Assessment we forgot to continue today.  It will be at your desk.  The room should be quiet for you.  If you don't take the test with me (Jaden, Syd, Hailey, you guys can work on Vault).  Nighty, night!

Even when in Peru
Our screen is ringin'
Email alerts are dingin'
Green button, 5B's waving,
Room 4's sharing, going CRAZY....
Hey I just Skyped You

But here's our hashtag #

Song Writing Monday was Awesome!

5B!  I LOVED what you did with the lyrics today!  I can't wait to see what Mrs. Petroski and Room 4 in CT came up with:)  I'll know you checked the blog if you write down a memory from this year to add to our brainstorm list for our Memory Books for writing class. It could be funny, serious, special, scary, embarrassing, awkward, etc.  Just please write down a memory for us to share.  Think of the photos I shared in the slideshow today.  Tomorrow:  Wicked Readers:  Dylan, Kelsey, Austin

Flipped Classroom Video Below:)

Ok..I tried and tried to post this video, but it is being stubborn, so here's the Flipped Classroom Assignment:
If you were given $20 right now, what would you do with it?
1) Spend it?  If yes, on what?
2) Save it?  If yes, how and then what would you save it for?
3) Donate it?  If yes, to what charity or cause?

Water Balloons, Sun and Mr. Freezes!

This is what this weather is all about!  Isaiah is enjoying a green Mr. Freeze on this warm, windy afternoon.  (You see me peeking around the corner? :)We plastered each other with water balloons earlier and now are enjoying a little refreshing snack!  How fun?!  He's got a MUCH better aim than I do!  The funny thing is, he wanted to get wet, so he just kept throwing them up in the air in front of him so they'd pop at his feet:) Weird!

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend, too.  I heard the dance on Friday was great!  Some of you danced, but some of you just watched?  What?  I also heard some 8th grader danced with a garbage can??  Now, that's crazy!  I went to several graduations of former 5B students!  It seems crazy!  I think I'll just blink and you guys will be seniors, too!  It makes me sad to think how quickly our year has gone:(

I just realized that this week will be our VERY LAST full week of school together as a 5B Family.  I know many of you are excited for summer to start (I am, too), but I still get sad and bummed out thinking that our time together is coming to an end.  So, be nice about it to those of us who feel this time has been special, fun or exciting in some way, ok?

This week is as normal as we will ever have, I think?  Weird to think that, huh?  I'll keep it short but remember some of you have midterms to return still (2 people - 1 boy, 1 girl).  And MOST of you had interest in getting a FREE book from the LAST book orders of the year.  They MUST be in by TUESDAY or they won't be here before the school year is done.  I know we saw some AWESOME titles for summer reading!  I know I'll be ordering quite a few for myself this summer.
Only problem is that we can't buy
it until October of next fall!
GRRRRRR!
Oh - Don't forget our 2 WICKED Readers for Monday - Dylan and Gage!  Can't wait!

I'll know you checked the blog.....if you check out the book cover and tell me whether you think it looks like a good one or bad one for reading this summer, ok?  The cover was just revealed on May 9!

This is how I felt today during puberty class...

5B,
We have had some fantastic, funny, serious, special and caring moments this year.  I can honestly say that today was the first time I was this upset, disappointed and shocked at the lack of respect and constant chatting I REPEATEDLY reminded you within a 10 minute time frame.  We surely do NOT want to end the school year with this type of daily behavior.  Nobody will be happy if that is the case.

I'm not going to say anymore about this since I know 5B is SO MUCH BETTER THAN THAT.  I'll know you checked the blog if you can find a picture of what it should look like on our phenomenal days: students listening, working, smiling, having fun, learning, quiet, single lines, etc.   Send me the picture as a screenshot.  We'll share them in the morning before starting our 6th grade orientation.  This shows extra effort by doing this.  I'll be extremely impressed with those students who take the time to send me these screenshots in emails.

Well, I need to cut this short because Tristan mentioned there was a baseball game tonight at East Park at 6:00.  I don't know if I'll make it by exactly 6:00, but I'll try.

Friday Reminders:
School sack lunch
$ for dance if going
Midterms signed  - Tristan, Hailey, Gage
Permission Slips for St. Paul Trip
Own device for Tech Fest (if want)

For 5B Homeroom:
Fun and perfectly hot day to celebrate Cadet Pride ticket goal!  Love the photo below!
I had a great time with this, especially the part where I got to fling the water balloons randomly at people!  Although I did not get drenched myself, it was a refreshing feeling:)  Heheheeee

Reminders:
Keep up the Cadet Pride - New Class Goal:  1,000 tickets before end of year.  We'll chat more about what the specific reward will be.

Coffee Talk:  Spy Cat - be ready and responsible!  Can't wait to see what you think of book.

Wicked Readers:  Go RACHEL, Go DONAVYN!  I'm so anxious to see how you'll start off our first WICKED READERS!!!!!  (Shane and Erika...be ready for THURSDAY!)

Planting/Extra Clothes:  Remember, we'll be getting down and dirty for some planting on Wednesday.  Be prepared for messy clothes.

Midterms:  TURN THEM IN...please:)  I missed a decent number of them today:(

Permission slips for St. Paul - due this Friday!

I'll know you checked the blog by coming in, having a seat and Reading to Self.  Be a great model for everyone else in 5B!

Monday, May 13, 2013

Psst... Shhh... It's a SECRET...

Hey, 5B!  Today was a good morning but rough afternoon with chatting, off-task behaviors and some impulsive actions.  I know we made our 500 ticket goal (actually exceeded it by 154!!) by acting in a very different way.

So, in order to be sure our responsible, respectful and trustworthy students can to be "rewarded" extra for this, you have a secret mission:  Decide WHO you will want to fling a water balloon at on Tuesday (IF the temperature is as hot as it is being predicted).  DO NOT tell anyone this is part of the blog.  I REALLY want to see WHO is checking.  EVEN if you KNOW a friend of yours has checked the blog, DO NOT TALK about it.  Only those students who check the blog will get this "freebee" chance to fling a water balloon at person of choice!  The rest of the water balloon activity will be a group activity.  Simply whisper the name of your "future victim"and I'll write it down for later.  DO NOT TALK ABOUT THIS!

SO, the DEAL IS...DON'T REMIND people to check the blog or talk to them about it or ANYTHING.  It's a special treat I'm allowing those who put forth the EXTRA effort to check the blog and demonstrate responsibility.:)  Yippee!  And that means since I'm writing the blog, I MUST be checking it, too!!!  Haha!!  Who will my target be??  Just wait and see, my darlings!!

Quick Reminders:
Coffee Talk for City of Ember!  Last Day!  Be prepared!
Midterms signed by parents - returned on Tuesday!  No excuses, please.
Permission slip for St. Paul trip - due by Friday!  Tomorrow would be great!
Birthday Kiddos...Remember, if you want to celebrate with us, please do!  We enjoy being a part of your new "year"!

Also.. for literacy:  What's the answer to the riddle?
Inside the greenhouse, is a white house.
Inside the white house, is a red house.
Inside the red house, are a lot of babies.

Remember, my clue was: it is a FRUIT...  Make inferences...Read between the lines:)

Hopefully You Know What TODAY IS......

MOTHER'S DAY!!!!
Whether you have already celebrated or wished your mom, stepmom, aunt, grandma, good friend, older sister, etc., here's a little poem you could share with someone you think is a great mom or cares just as a mom does!
I hope you enjoyed the sun this weekend.  I wish the temperature would increase a bit.  Oh, well, at least we don't have SNOW on the ground:)  I got to go to a hotel with a water park!  So much fun!  Isaiah is going to be a fish when we grows up.  (At least that's what he told me this weekend)

This week should be somewhat normal.  We are getting back into literacy with our last unit:  The Kingdom of Green.  Our first day of switching for guided reading seemed to go quite well.  I'm glad it was a nice change for everyone.  We have some upcoming work and events to think about, so please check carefully below and mark your planners or calendars:

Monday:
1)  Sharing the rest of our Fictional ("gasp", it's fake!) Pieces and Cute Cut Movie Trailers!!  Bring a snack for BOTH of these classes - yes, that means 2 snacks:)

Tuesday:
1)  Last Coffee Talk for City of Ember - and moving into the next book:)  Be responsible.  We've had a lot of incomplete reading lately.

Wednesday:
1)  FIRST WICKED READERS of THE YEAR!!  RACHEL and DONAVYN perform for us!!! Can't wait to see how they make reading come ALIVE!
2)  Coffee Talk for Spy Cat. Be Responsible - read before the night before so you don't forget (hint, hint for a few of you...)

Thursday:
1)  2nd Set of WICKED READERS!! ERIKA and SHANE!!  Whoo- hoo!!  Wow us!
2)  Last Coffee Talk for Found!  Wonder if they'll want to move onto the next book??  I do!
3)  Final PUBERTY Test!  This will be part of your science grade for the 4th quarter!  Know your information:)

Friday:  Special Activity!!
1)  6th Grade Orientation with all 5th graders in Cresco, Lime Springs and Elma.  You'll learn about the junior high, iPad use/rules, switching, new schedule, etc.  You'll be all mixed up with other grades so you can get to know people better before our big field trip to St. Paul.
2)  After the orientation we'll have a TECH FESTIVAL!  This will be a chance to learn and show all the different tech ideas, links, websites, apps, etc. that you've enjoyed this year with others.  Maybe you can check them out for this summer to mess around with:)
3) Finally, you'll end with a school-packed picnic lunch outside with your future 6th grade classmates! What a fun way to meet people!?

I'll know you checked the blog when you come in if...
tell me ONE amazing thing about your mom - be personal - not just "she's nice".  I want more than that!

Hard-Working Wednesday was Wonderful to See in 5B:)

Hey, 5B,
Just wanted to say thanks so much for such a great day!  And congrats big time for meeting and exceeding the 500 point goal for Cadet Pride:) Yee-haw baby!

I'm sitting in my meetings as I type this.  I got instructions from a teacher on how to draw the pigeon from Mo Willems' books!  Here's my drawing based on the author/illustrator:  The teacher that shared this actually got to listen to Mo Willems speak at a conference!  I was so excited and jealous.  I thought you guys would enjoy it!  I'll give you the same directions I got, and you too can draw the PIGEON!

Remember about tomorrow's field trip!  I'm thinking we go EVEN if it is raining or really muddy.  So, please make smart choices about shoes (or even bringing extra shoes to change into after/before going), layered clothing, a water bottle and CADET PRIDE:)

I'll know you checked the blog if you find which part of the pigeon drawing displays both the
M and the W for Mo Willems.  Write it down on a piece of paper, with your NAME on it, hand it to me.

THEN, go find a spot that helps you focus and Read to Self.

Oh, and I found out about a bunch of new apps I want to share with you, too!  They are TOO FUN!  See you soon!

Most Marvelous Monday!

Wow, 5B,
Today was a wonderful way to start the week!  I think everyone got green tickets for super behavior in most classes! That is the perfect way to begin a week of more madness and crazy schedule:)  I think the fresh air everyone got this weekend was helpful!  I REALLY enjoyed using some of our recess minutes from MISIC today!  What fun!  Also, we need to add Gage's minutes he added to our class, and he gets his ice cream after lunch Tuesday!  Lucky guy!

I'm excited to start working on the Wicked Readers!  I'm sure with what I've seen from my 5B Babycakes, I'll be way impressed with the creativity and effort put into the reading!  If you didn't have a chance to find a book/story today, or you wanted a book from home, be sure to look for one tonight to start your AMAZING plan for entertaining the listeners/audience!  If you need ideas, I've got all sorts of them! So, just ask me:)

Let's have another perfect day of listening, on-task and 100% effort on Tuesday!  I know some of you have a band concert in the evening, so we will be cheering you on! And try not to give too much homework.

Homework tonight:
City of Ember:  Coffee Talk on Tuesday
Valley Forge worksheet:  for only those who watched the video today
Science quiz/tests:  heart circulation and vocab quiz
Any Cadet Academy Slips to be returned
**Cute Cut Movie Trailers - due Friday... your group is welcome to come in before school or at recess if you feel you need more time than what I'm offering in class**

I'll know you checked the blog, if you come in Tuesday, and do ONE of the dance moves your classmates made up on Monday morning.  Hope you were watching!  Mrs. B and I have to still do ours!  Wyatt S. will get to join in on the fun too:)

Back to Normal Weather...but Not Normal School Week...

Now, this is what I'm talking about for spring weather!  I'm sitting in my backyard as I post this blog:)  Yeh!!  Isaiah is riding his scooter, and the sun is shining!  Yippee!  This feels normal for spring!

But...  This week at school.... not thinking it will be normal:(
Monday:  Getting back into routines since last week was pretty wack-o!
Tuesday:  Band concert that night.
Wednesday:  3-hour early out, Spring Dance for Cadet Pride, Possible Mystery Skype/ooVoo
Thursday:  Field Trip to Nature Center - most of the day - OUTSIDE:)
Friday:  1st day of new plan for Literacy time, Sharing Cute Cut Movie Trailers

Well, I've stopped about 4 times to help Isaiah with his bike, a friend stopped by on her walk and it's just to nice out to be on the computer!  So, I'm signing off for now.

Be ready for more goofiness this week!  Great job last week in literacy helping teach 1st graders about Animoto! But this week, we're back to 5th grade land:)

Be sure your families know about the rescheduled field trip to St. Paul on Friday, May 31, ok?

Happy Sunny Day!  I may see some of you at the Just for Kix Dance Recital tonight! Good luck.

Sad News Today...but Looking Forward to.....

Yep!  Mark your calendars, 5B!  We managed to get our field trip to the Science Museum of Minnesota rescheduled!  Yippee!!  The teachers worked for a quite a while after school contacting the bus company, the museum and other people involved to make this day happen for you!  So, be sure to thank all of the 5th grade teachers at some point on Friday, ok!?
(Mrs. Halverson, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Walter, Ms. Ginther and little ol' me:)

Tomorrow will still be a goofy day, so bring the lunches you had planned and the board games we mentioned today.  NO ONE should be at school at 6:30 A.M. on Friday, May 3!!  Right!??

Heads-Up:
Don't forget how wet many of you got today at recess.  I know it seems weird, but get those boots back out for a few more days.  Have winter coats, hats and mittens with you.  You WILL be outside for recess, so be prepared.  It's not showing Cadet Pride if you come to school purposely without the proper clothing for this weather.  So, prove your common sense:)  How many times in your life do you think you'll be able to play in the snow on May 3rd?!   It's actually PERFECT snowman-building weather.  I'll pictures of your snowman if you make one at recess!

I'll know you checked the blog...
IF
1) you leave your lunches in your locker
2) come in the room and Read to Self or Work on Writing independently

It's going to be a goofy day, so I'd like to see us start off with self-control so that we can continue the rest of the day!

Short Post for Crazy, Long Week...

Wow, 5B, this has been a whirlwind of a week!  I can't keep straight what day it is....with fun projects with first graders, music practice and programs, make-up guidance, puberty and band changes!!!  Oh, my goodness...  My head is just spinning.

Emily, the 8th grader that job shadowed me today, said she couldn't believe how busy things are in here.  I told her that these days were extra goofy, but yes, life in 5th grade land will definitely keep her on her toes!  She was undecided about the career of teaching.  This is probably good to really reflect on what she wants to do.  Just think, in just 3 years, you'll be having the same decisions to make about what you think you may want to do as you get older. Crazy, huh?

Ok...short  and sweet, right?!  I'll know you checked the blog if you watch this awesome girl singing her version of "Some Nights" by F.U.N.  Thanks, Isabella for sharing it with me!  Too cool.  Just tell me what you think of it:)  Click Here
