Well, 5B, I hope you've been enjoying your days off from school. I know I have. I've been extremely busy visiting family and traveling, and even though I'm tired, it's a lot of fun. We've been out of town for a bit, but I'm back in town now to celebrate the coming of a new year, 2010!! If you're able to comment at all, I'd love to hear/see what any of my 5B Babycakes have been up to over the break.
I've had some free time to continue reading the Twilight series. I absolutely LOVED the first book when I read it in November! Then, Santa gave me New Moon for Christmas, and I couldn't stop reading it, so I finished that one in 3 days! One night, I read for 4 hours straight. I guess my Read It and Eat It calendar would be filled up!! I'm hoping to see the movie before I come back from break, but I don't know if that will happen. I was trying to take a break before reading the third book, Eclipse, so I could see the movie for New Moon first, but I couldn't do it. I started reading it today. It's like I'm addicted to it! If anyone has read any of these, I would LOVE to talk to people about them.
I'll check for comments each day and then make a few more posts before I see you again "next year"! Keep checking the blog. I'm hoping to give you a heads-up if we plan to have our talent show when we come back. I'll chat with the other 5th grade teachers, and let you know what to plan for!
Enjoy the rest of your vacation! Hopefully, you've found some time to read something that you enjoy as much as I have with the Twilight books. Take care!

Get Ready for your Last Full Week of School in 2009!
Hey, all my 5B Sweethearts! Hope this weekend was as fun and relaxing as your 2 1/2 day break you had in the middle of last week! By the looks of the weather forecast, we can "hopefully" plan on a full week of school this week. I know I'm looking forward to seeing you all more than just a couple of days like last week.
A few things I wanted to point out to you...
1)Hopefully by tonight, you can see an updated slideshow of photos. Try to pick yourself out. It goes back to sharing writing pieces #1 to ITBS to the parent visit! Enjoy seeing yourself shine!!
2) I FINALLY figured out a problem I was having with our blog today. At the end of each post I write (or if you are the weekly bloggers, too), there is a place for you or your family to post a comment on what the blog is covering or just a comment about school in general. I've been trying to figure out why our blog wasn't letting us do this all year, but Santa must have given me a Christmas gift early. What a guy!?? Anyway, just wanted you to know that you and/or your parents are welcome to write a comment to me or to the class if they wish. Of course, make sure your comments are appropriate for all of our eyes to see! OK??? I'm excited to see what our 5B students and families may have to share with us.
Lastly, remember to be working on the big projects do this week... your explorer biography is due Monday (if you haven't handed it in yet), writing piece #2 is due Friday (NO exceptions), your explorer/vocab test is on Tuesday for social studies, book club reading should be finished on Monday in class, and of course, coloring and drawing for the computer project should be done daily. Also, I'm guessing you will have a math test by the end of this week or early next week over division. So make sure you are practicing that at home, too.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, and share a comment with us! See you Monday morning!!

What a WEEK??!!
Hey there, my 5B Angels!
I've missed you. I know it's fun to have a few days off for time with family and fun in the snow, but I still miss seeing my babycakes! As far as I know, we are scheduled for a regular day of school tomorrow. Still watch in the morning on the TV or the school's website, but from what I've heard, the plan is for a regular day of school on Friday. That's the good news!! Now the bad news....well, maybe some of you will think this is more good news... I have a meeting Friday morning that was scheduled awhile ago. So, I won't see my little munchkins until lunch time. I'm not sure who the sub is, but I am sure you'll all do your best to get back on track from a crazy week of no school.
If you're a Radical Reader, don't plan on worrying about it for tomorrow. I'm not sure everyone was ready for it anyway. So, we'll plan our last round of Radical Readers for next week sometime.
Hopefully, you took some time to work on your Explore Biography poster for Mrs. Halverson. I'm not sure what her plan is, but everyone should have had ENOUGH TIME to complete the poster. Also, remember, Mrs. Kuhn wanted something from you the next time she sees you for word study. I can't remember what that is, but you guys do, I think!:)
Get some rest for your 2nd and last day of school for this week. Be good tomorrow morning, and I'll see you all at lunch. Oh, don't forget to look for the new ornaments. There are 3 new ones - Wed., Thurs., and Friday!!

Hard-Workers Last Week...Keep It Up!!
5B, I know there are a lot of activities going on in school and outside of school right now, and I'm impressed with everyone's behavior and responsibility this week. What a great way to kick off the month of December! I'm happy you made it through your trial week of sitting in your "chosen" spots. Looks like you're able to hang out by your buds for the rest of the month! Just keep acting as respectful as you did last week!
Thought I'd do a little reminder on homework and school projects happening in the next few weeks here, in case you let it slip... I'm expecting 5B to put 100% effort into your work like always, even if there are extra activities going on...
Social Studies: Biography on explorer due THIS FRIDAY, study vocab for upcoming quiz
Math: Focus on division - keep practicing, test will be in a few weeks
Reading: Book club reading, preparing for Think Fights, supposed to be done by THIS FRIDAY, last group of Radical Readers THIS FRIDAY
Writing: Piece #2 due Friday, December 18, coloring and drawing for computer project done daily
Also, reminders about extras... don't forget to record on your calendar for Read It and Eat It. Bring in a stocking if you haven't yet for Monday. Get thinking/practicing for ideas for the talent show. I'm trying to come up with something myself, too! Keep your eyes out for the new ornament on Monday!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend! See you in the morning!

Terrific Tuesday!!
Another great day to keep the week going strong, 5B!! Wow! I'm so proud of everyone. During the homeroom/band time, a few groups were a bit chatty, but not bad. Remember, if you would like to stay in these groups until Christmas, make sure to work on that self-control.
A couple updates... I posted a new survey about whose group may have the toughest time with chatting. I'd love to see what the class thinks. I'm even going to vote this time!
Also, hopefully those people who handed in their Read It & Eat Its remembered to bring home their Casey's pizza coupon. We forgot to put that on the planner today.
Make sure to tell Moms and Dads about the holiday talent show!!! I am always so amazed with the fun tricks and talents people choose. And don't FREAK OUT about this. It's just for fun and to enjoy each other. You saw our example today in class, so OBVIOUSLY you don't have to be amazing!! Just entertain us with something.
Some of you wanted that snow flake website from today, so I thought I'd just add a link on the blog for it. Click on the link, and it will take you to the home page. http://snowflakes.barkleyus.com/
Have a good night... remember to do some "coloring" tonight. I put up the 2nd ornament, so keep your eyes out for it. I'm guessing EVERYONE will be able to find this one:)

Starting Off Strong on Monday!
Great first day back after a nice relaxing break, 5B! Glad to see everyone back into the swing of things. We have about 3 weeks of school before your next relaxing and longer break. As we all know, there are major activities going on in our classrooms to be completed before that time of relaxation. (Book Clubs, Writing Piece #2, Think Fights, Writing Project and that's just in literacy!!!)
Not only will we be busy with classroom work, there will be extra events that seem to fill up some of our December days. We have a 3-hour early out again on Wednesday of this week. There will be limo rides, lunch at Pizza Hut and the Big Blast party coming up in December as well. 5th graders will also participate in a holiday party towards the end of this month. And hopefully, we can avoid the annoying weather we've dealt with the past few years. Whoa!! I'm getting overwhelmed just writing about it!!!
5B, I didn't get a chance to tell you that you did well today sitting in your new groups. Keep it up, and show me you can listen and learn no matter who you sit by. That shows true maturity!!
I'll know you checked the blog tonight if you asked me this question once the attendance and pledge are done, "So, what's up with the Christmas ornament?" Then I'll tell the class the answer... Have a good night...get that homework done (at least for literacy tonight) and we'll see you for another great day tomorrow!!

It's finally THANKGIVING
This week we don't go to school Thursday and Friday because of Thanksgiving. Wednesday we get out of school one hour early. This week is short. I had to do this by myself, so that's all I'm going to write.

Super Turn-Out with Parents!
5B, I'm so glad so many of your parents could be a part of our American Education Parent Day. I know that it will be difficult to find a day or time that works for everyone, but I thought this turn-out was fantastic! Kids, I'm glad you enjoyed having your families visit. Hopefully, you told your parents how much you appreciated them spending that time with you. I also want to tell you how impressed I was with how you took "teaching" your parents/families quite seriously. Thanks for being such a great bunch of munchkins (hehhehehe).
If you haven't noticed the large bookshelf to the right of the new posts, then check it out. Right now, I've listed a few books that I've read for my own enjoyment. What I'd like to do is offer students to suggest books they've enjoyed to classmates and me! You'll need to fill out a short sheet of paper for me before I put your suggested book up there, but I'd love to share what you're reading with your friends. It seems like that's a great way for kids to get hooked on books - seeing what their friends are reading! So, ask me about the bookshelf if you think you have a book to add to it! I'll be happy to explain it to you.
Well, the votes are in... the holiday dinners seem to be the favorite school lunch. Check back later tonight or tomorrow morning, and I'll have a new survey up!
Lastly, our schedule this week is going to be somewhat normal...except that we only have 3 days, with a 1-hour early out on Wednesday! But, keep in mind, the teachers are quite excited to have a few normal days before Thanksgiving break. So, be ready for listening, learning and a bit of homework this week!! See you in the morning!! Oh, hopefully they'll be a new slide show to the right of the posts by morning. We'll see how well my computer is working!:)

5B is Famous!!!!
Well, 5B, Mrs. Maiers (the teacher who visited our room and was amazed by your descriptions of reading and writing) contined to talk about the excitement she saw from you throughout the afternoon when she chatted with the teachers. She was thrilled to see students who showed interest in learning and having fun doing it!
I'll let you know as soon as I get the video from Mike. If we get the okay from all parents, maybe I'll attach the video to the blog so your families can see it, too! When I saw Mike later on in the afternoon, he signed "bunny - out" to me. I told him that many of you had said goodbye that was as you left.
I was impressed with your behavior in front of our guest today, 5B. I always feel so proud of you and our school when people see you and comment on how neat, funny, exciting, respectful, etc. the students are. So thank you for being YOU!
Let's have another exciting day of school tomorrow and the rest of the year!! You keep me excited because of how willing you are to learn something new! Thanks for what you do for me everyday!!
Reminder... Reading ITBS and Vocabulary ITBS tomorrow. You also have a quiz over your science terms about rocks, and could be taking home math to practice with unit 3 for your test next Tuesday! Also, remind parents about Friday's event and if they are joining you for lunch!
See you all tomorrow!

Good Report from Friday!
Hey, 5B!
I stopped in to school on Saturday to check on a few things and saw a note left from our substitute teacher, Mrs. Mahr. She wrote that the day went well. She loved the Radical Readers from all classes and felt like students worked well in writing class. That is such a wonderful way to prove your respectful and responsible selves, 5B! I'm so proud of you all! And I heard that EVERYONE was there (for at least most of the day)! Sure, the one day I'm gone, you all decide to be healthy!! Heehheeee...
Today, I had the honor of watching several 5th graders dancing and singing on stage! I thought the cast from "The Wizard of Oz" did a fantastic job. I was so impressed to see students try something new and be so confident! For any of you who tried out for the play but didn't make it this time, make sure to try again. Don't give up because when it finally does happen for you, it will be worth it!! Again, great job to the munchkins and poppies!!!
Just a reminder that ITBS continues this week. 5th grade takes the first part of the Reading test on Monday. We've been working on what reading is all year long, so I have no doubts that you'll have any problems with the ITBS tests in reading class. Don't forget that your card story for writing class is due on Monday, too! We'll share some of these in class to see how gradual the stories are.
I checked the envelope for our Star of the Week (last week), and we DO have a student's name that showed up quite a few times!! Guess you'll have to wait until Monday morning to find out if it's you!!
Also, remind your parents about our invitation to our classroom this Friday, November 20 from 10:45 - 12:00. I'll be checking with kids this week to see how many families will be joining us for our activities. Again, parents are welcome to come for lunch, but we do NEED TO KNOW ahead of time. In fact, we will even asked for parents to "prepay" so moving through the lunch line will be smooth and speedy. I believe the scheduled lunch that day is chicken patty and fries.
Have a great Sunday night, 5B! I am excited to see my little sweethearts tomorrow morning! I missed seeing you last Friday!

People who won think fits where Stones in Water, and Double Identity. We'll find out today who will win between Tarot Says Beware and The Mystery of the Dark Old House. Aaron gave himself the nickname "Hotdog" today.
Good luck on the ITBS the rest of the week.

A Little of This, A Little of That
Tonight's post will cover quite a few topics. I'll send a note home tomorrow with similar information, but I thought I'd highlight some of the ideas....
Today was a great day, 5B! Respectful, hard-working students all day long! Keep it up. If you are one of the chatter bugs from word study today, just make sure to think about it before class tomorrow!
Thanks to students and parents for making it to conferences last week. I am extremely happy to report that EVERY single family made it for conferences! That doesn't always happen, so thank you so much for coming in, chatting about 5th grade and giving or taking suggestions to continue a good year! For any parents that asked for additional information from a particular class, I'll be getting things out to you or passing on your messages this week. Also, thanks to the students who braved it and came to their own conference! (I know some of you couldn't come because of scheduling problems, so thanks for trying.)
This week is the start of ITBS. See the schedule below when tests are and what subject areas...
Wednesday, Nov. 11 Math - Prob. Solving
Thursday, Nov, 12 Science
Friday, Nov. 13 Trial Test (taken in science)
Monday, Nov. 16 Reading (part 1)
Tuesday, Nov. 17 Math Concepts/Estimation
Wednesday, Nov. 18 any make-up tests
Thursday, Nov. 19 Reading (part 2) and Vocab
Along with ITBS the next 2 weeks, we have a Veteran's Day assembly on Wednesday from 10:15 to 10:45. Then the FOLLOWING Wednesday, Nov. 18, is a 3-hour early out.
The Germ Bug hit 5B today. One student was out sick, and 3 others went home with fevers today. Remember to keep hands washed/sanitized. Cover your mouth/nose with coughs and sneezes. Try NOT to share/borrow too many items from each other to limit the passing of germs. Hopefully, we can stay somewhat healthy. Cross your fingers.
Responsibility was and will be tested more and more this week in literacy class. Students had a writing flipbook and pages to read for today (Monday). I was disappointed to find a handful of students NOT done with these 2 assignments. After all, there was a 3 day weekend. Students heard of my disappointment and know that it is a sign of disrespect. A habit of not getting homework done will result in spending time at recess and/or Mr. Wiley's classroom. Parents, could you double check with your 5B student to make sure work is done. 5th graders are old enough to be repsonsible for their own work, but a helpful reminder once in a while isn't so bad. Thanks! I'd like to think students will be more responsible from now on.
Finally, I just wanted 5B to have a heads up that I will be gone for a bit at the end of the week. I'll be gone Thursday morning for a school meeting, but I'll be back at lunch time. Then Friday, I'll be gone the whole day. I'll be spending time with some family. So, I just wanted my babycakes to know I don't get as many days with them this week.
I'll know you checked the blog tonight by letting me know what little angels you'll be when I'm gone on Thursday and Friday!!! Don't forget to check the poll. It closes tomorrow, and I think there's only 10 votes at this point!! Have a good night!! Stay healthy!

OUR SMASHING WEEK

Crazy from Candy?
Hey, my 5Ber's! I'm hoping you had a day to come down from your sugar rush after trick-or-treating. I got to see a few of you, but my street wasn't too busy with trick-or-treaters this year. I did have one student say this to me though, "You hit the bag, we hit the road, that's the way it works!" Jerry Seinfeld would be proud to know his line was being used! Anyway, I hope everyone had fun over the Halloween weekend.
If you look below Kelsey's wordle, you should see a short video clip. It's titled, "Isaiah and his Cousins." I thought this was a funny to show you. You can do the same thing with your own digital photos if you visit the JibJab site.
Well, here's a heads-up for this week. Monday is normal. There is a 1-hour early out on Tuesday for conferences. Remember those of you who have conferences on Tuesday to come and be a part of your conference. There will be NO GROUP BAND on Tuesday due to the early out. However, individual lessons will still take place. Then Wednesday should be pretty normal. Thursday is another 1-hour early out (with a schedule change that day) for conferences. I'll expect to see my Thursday conference kids that night, too. Finally, there is NO SCHOOL on Friday!! An extra day for you to sleep in!
Then, here's a little preview for some events in November:
1) Conferences (duh!)
2) ITBS tests...but remember, only the reading, math and science ones!
3) American Education Week...an invitation will be sent to families later about this.
4) Of course, Thanksgiving break!
Try to get used to the new time change tonight, and I'll see you bright and early in the morning! Oh, if you haven't voted for the poll yet, please do! I'll be changing it tomorrow.

What a Wednesday!
Today kinda went by in a blur. I miss seeing my 5B Baby Cakes all morning. The new Smart Board was fun to test out this morning, even though some students were a little daring with their drawings!!!! You know who you are! Hopefully we'll get more time to work at it/on it tomorrow. Today went by so fast that we didn't get a chance to share our "Warm Fuzzies" from the character counts cards AND I didn't get a picture of all of our crazy socks!! Grr... I just wish I could see my 5B darlings more than I do. Well, what are we to do? Nothing, I guess. I just wanted you to know that I do miss you and wish we had more "extra" time together. Thanks for a great day today, 5B. There were SEVERAL character counts cards, so we'll share them right away in the morning. Don't forget to be voting for your Star of the Week. Votes must be in by the end of the day Thursday!
I found a few games online and thought it might be fun to try on the Smart Board tomorrow. I'll check them out more and you can see what you think in the morning! Have a great night. Remember - red and/or purple for caring & citizenship tomorrow, and see what you have for clothes donations!
kjhnunu (That was "hi" from Isaiah)

EXCITING NEWS!!!
After 5B students left today, a rather large box was delivered to our room. I'll give you a few hints about its contents...
1) it's educational (yeah, I know, boring!!)
2) it's heavy
3) it's hanging on our classroom wall
4) it's NOT dumb!!!
Any guesses?? If you didn't figure it out, I guess you will have to wait until tomorrow to see!! But I have to say that I had a difficult time staying on task as it was being put up this afternoon!! Yeh!!!
Other news...hmmm... Well, today was a quick but good day. Kids, the "character" you built today is something I'll be looking for especially this week since we are celebrating Character Counts week. Don't forget to wear green and/or sunglasses tomorrow. If you read the note clearly, your sunglasses can be worn TO school and AT RECESS. I wanted to point that out in case some of you didn't read closely enough.
The rest of the week follows a normal schedule, and I have to say that last week was one of 5B's best weeks. I think it was due to a normal schedule and structure. So, keep up the fabulous attitudes. Some of us may need to put more effort into our indivdual goals, specifically playing with items and looking at the speaker, but as a whole, 5B is quite impressive!! Way to go, Top Dogs!!!
The results for the last poll ended up 100% for Reece's Peanut Butter Cups. Check out the next poll. See you tomorrow...Sweet dreams!!

Marvelous Monday!
What a marvelous day for 5B. In all classes, compliments were shared about 5B's behaviors (except lining up in Soc. St. and Sci. classes I guess). Not much else to report on. 5B, remember to be thinking about the Star of the Week. We forgot to chat about that at all today - busy, busy, busy!
If you're looking for a little giggle, check out the link below to visit Black Dog's Riddles. I checked a few out and played some of the games at the bottom. Just a little harmless fun!

Also, I changed the Poll Question. So check it out and vote what you think. Thanks again for a marvelous day, 5B. Let's have 4 more just like it!!

Ready for Normal???
What's normal?? We don't even know what that is anymore, do we 5B? This week doesn't have any "extra" events scheduled at this point! Yeehaw!! That is quite exciting for the teachers. I'm not sure kids would agree with that, but at least we can end the 1st quarter with a few days of classes, right?
5B, I wanted to remind you that you have until Tuesday evening to sell items for the ChipShoppe fundraiser. Envelopes and money should be brought in by Wednesday morning. If you know you are done selling, then bring in your envelopes on Monday or Tuesday of this week. Thanks for all of the help putting money in our school's piggy bank. We'll be taking some fun field trips this year, and it's all thanks to your efforts on this fundraiser!!
Kids, make sure to share with your families the new event coming to our literacy class on Fridays from October 30th through December 11th!! Hopefully, you're gathering book ideas and maybe even some costume ideas for your turn to be a....RADICAL READER!!!!! I can't wait to see and hear you when it's your turn! Remember reading is supposed to be fun!! Here's an idea - when you read for your 20 minutes for the Read It and Eat It, pick the book you may want to do for Radical Reader! You'll get 2 things done at the same time!!!
It looks like we have 20 votes on our Would You Rather Poll. It closes in about 3 hours. So, if you don't get a chance to vote, make sure you vote on the next on. I'll keep a new idea going each week. Have a great last few hours of your weekend, and I'll see you bright and early for a full and regular Monday! Yippee!! I'll know you checked the blog this weekend if you whisper these words to me in the morning, "It's just another manic Monday."

Super Day in 5B!
I don't know if it's because we're tired on Mondays or what, but 5B did a great job listening and showing respectful behaviors today! Keep it up, my TOP DOGS..ruff, ruff, ruff. Hopefully you remembered your homework for both math and social studies today. Also, check out those books in the book orders since we didn't get a chance to go through them very much.
Not a lot to report today, but just thought I'd let you know how proud I am of all of your efforts for being such great students and classmates to each other!
I'll know you checked the blog tonight if you do me a nice but nasty little favor. A dear teacher friend of mine has a birthday tomorrow. She doesn't want to make it a big deal, but I think it's important to celebrate birthdays! So, my favor is this... whenever you see Mrs. Kerian tomorrow, say this phrase to her, "40 and still lookin' fine!" But of course, say it with some pizzazz!!! She'll be mad at me, but she'll know I'm doing it because I care!! Can't wait to see how she reacts! Have a good night!

It's Been a While...
Wow, I can't believe the week flew by so quickly. My family was quite busy last week each night, and I'm sure other families have all sorts of activities pulling them in different directions. Hopefully, my post won't be too late for kids to check tonight.
First of all, I wanted to thank all of the families who could stop in on Friday to read with the kids. Obviously as a literacy teacher, this is an area I hope to instill in my students. It was great to see parents and kids reading together and doing it in a relaxed setting. Of course, the food probably helped, too! So, I just wanted families to know how much I appreciate the support in viewing reading as an important part of every student's day. Keep it up!!
Well, I thought with MISIC testing and foggy weather over, the kids would get back into a pretty normal schedule. WRONG!! This upcoming week has 3 goofy days in it. Monday and Tuesday are okay, but don't forget to participate in the homecoming dress-up days. A pink letter came home on Friday, but here's a reminder: Monday - Favorite Sport/College Team Jersey Day (any sports clothing you like is just fine!), Tuesday - Pink Day to support fight vs. cancer, Wednesday - Hat Day, Thursday - Athletic Clothes Day (for Fall Fitness Day), and Friday - Blue/White Day (support Cadets!).
Like I said, Monday and Tuesday will be okay, but on Wednesday there's an assembly for character education from 9:30 - 10:15. On Thursday, the High School Food and Fitness team is hosting their 1st Annual Fall Fitness Day. Students will participate in 4 different stations of physical activity to support healthy living. This event takes place from 2:20 - 3:00. Then of course Friday is an 3-hour early out due to homecoming. There will be a Pep Assembly in the morning to gear up our school spirit. Don't forget the homecoming parade at 2:30!
So, we'll do our best to keep some structure and routine this week, but as you can see, there are some definite obstacles in our way. However, each of our extra events does have a good reason behind it.
Kids, keep up the ghostbusting from last week. I'm impressed even in the first 2 days of improved behaviors. When you put your mind to something, you sure can make a difference!! I'll know you checked the blog this weekend if you spread this message around to other 5th grade students in the morning: (From now on when it rains during morning recess, students are expected to sit directly in front of a locker. They can chat with friends next to them or choose to read from their book bins. But no games will be allowed anymore.) I'll explain more about this in the morning, but this will give you a heads-up before you walk in the building.
Have a good night's rest and we'll see you bright and early!! Don't forget to read your 20 minutes tonight (if you haven't already)!

Missing Out!
Well, it sounds like I missed out on a super field trip on Friday to Norman Borlaug's family farm. Ms. Klenke took pictures of our darling 5B Angles and sent them to me. From the photos, it looked like students were quite interested in learning more about the Father of the Green Revolution. Ms. Klenke reported that 5B students are a well-behaved class. That's what EVERY teacher wants to hear about her babies while she's gone. Thanks, 5B for being your respectful selves...
As we start a new week, we say goodbye to MISIC and hello to a more normal schedule (for the most part). There will be a few make-up tests from the last 2 weeks, but the rest of us can get back into our routines starting on Monday. I've recorded all students scores and explained to each student where their strength areas are in the subcategories of each subject area. If parents or students would like more explanations, I'd be happy to chat. Just get ahold of me when it works for you.
Like I mentioned earlier, this week will be "normal" for the most part. However, there is a 3-hour early out on Wednesday with the Chipshoppe Fundraiser Assembly in the morning, and on Friday, the 5th graders have their Book-It Kick Off from 2:45 - 3:15. So, there are still a few events to fit into our week. Parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, friends, the only thing you need for Friday is to show up. Everything else will be provided. It's so great to have 5B's families model the importance and enjoyment of reading! Can't wait to see you Friday.
Kids, I missed you on Friday. It was my first day of being without you this year. It made me sad to miss such a fun and important day. So, to prove you checked the blog this weekend, as you walk in the classroom Monday morning, tell me "It's OK, Mrs. Sorenson. I forgive you." That will make me feel better about missing out on our day last Friday. Thanks! See you in the A.M. Oh, and check out the Survey Question to the right of this post. Vote for your pick. Let's see which category has the highest results!

MISIC MISIC MISIC
MISIC - that's the word of the week. It seems that MISIC is driving our schedule everday this week. 5B students have been putting forth wonderful effort and serious attitudes in each of their tests so far. We only have one (for Science) left on Thursday. So, hang in there, babycakes, you can do it!!
Because MISIC testing is assiged to each section and grade, we need to change our schedules around each day and even the amount of time we have for classtime. This is difficult for me because I feel like I haven't seen my 5B Angels a whole lot since MISIC has started. So, like the kids, I am ready for MISIC to be over and done with for the fall. At least on Friday, we get to enjoy learning in a different way when we go on our field trip to the Norman Borlaug farm.
Hopefully, parents saw the note that came home yesterday that gave a heads-up to the Book-it Kick Off Jamboree we're having next Friday, Oct. 2 from 2:45 - 3:15 pm. We've invited only 1 guest for each student because we don't have much space for everyone, but we'll be having other events throughout the year that will encourage families to join us in class. As the day gets closer, I'll be asking students if they have someone coming to join them for a count of how many breadsticks we'll be ordering for our snacks!
Kids, in order to prove you checked the blog tonight, go to my webpage. Under the category of Kids ONLY, click on Songs and Chants. Find the chant called, 5B Class Chant. Try to learn it tonight, so when I teach it to the class tomorrow, you'll already know what to do!! Good luck!

Some Issues with Blogger This Weekend...
5B sat together on Friday towards the end of the day to share their thoughts about it being the end of another week of school. The students chose their Post Title to be... "Darn, it's Friday." The first paragraph was full of reasons why students were sad it was the end of the week. The reasons ranged from certain classes they enjoyed, certain teachers they'll miss, friends they'll miss, etc. The second paragraph shared feelings of students who felt like they were A-OKAY that it was Friday! They were ready for the weekend! We also made a Wordle of our thoughts for the first month of school for 5B. I saved the students' blog to work on it after they left school Friday, and when I went to tweak and post it, the words came up as garble-ee-goo. I tried and tried to save what 5B had wanted to share, but it was a mess! So, I'm sorry to my dear little angels that their blog was not shared the way they wanted it. We'll make sure to do a couple of them this week, ok?!!
I did manage to find the Wordle we created. It should be off to the right of this post. Click on it to view it larger.
I know it's late, so many students may not even be getting a chance to read this post. No matter the case, have a good night's rest, and we'll see you in the morning.

Why I am a Teacher....
There were several different comments made today that would give any teacher a warm, fuzzy feeling inside...
"Do we have to go home?"
"It's time to go already?"
"But I don't want to stop writing."
"Why don't we get to Read to Self today?"
And the one that tops them all...
"I like working on our timelines in social studies because we don't have to learn anything."
Today was a definitely good day for me as a teacher, to hear such positive comments about the school day. It's obvious that some students don't even realize they just might be learning something AND having fun at the same time!! Who would of thought?
Another warm fuzzy feeling I get is when I watch a particular YouTube video of a group of students singing their hearts out for a teacher. Kids, if your parents say it's okay, visit the link below and tell me your thoughts about the video tomorrow in school!

Good Start to the Week!
Another good day in 5B! It sounds like science was quite a messy experience today...building layers and layers of soil and water?? Mrs. Halverson's hair was just about pulled all out by the end of the day with that crazy activity, but she said 5B handled themselves extremely well under the messy/crazy circumstances. That really shows good character, you guys! Being able to control yourself in new situations shows how sophisticated (huh...) you are! Keep it up.
A few students brought to my attention this morning that Dr. Norman Borlaug passed away this weekend. The field trip we have planned to his family farm is next Friday. This will make our visit even more special as we learn about his amazing accomplishments. To prove you checked the blog tonight, click on this link that shares a rap written by students sharing how important Dr. Norman Borlaug is and all he has done for our world. You should be able to listen to it as well. The beginning sounds a little funky, but I listened to it a few times and really liked what I learned and the rhythm it goes to.

Have a great night! Let's have another fantabulous day on Tuesday!!

Fantastic Friday!
After some issues that were occurring outside of class last week and a serious class discussion, I am quite pleased to say that 5B showed all teachers what they are capable of on Friday. After a few volunteers sang us their best rendition, we sang and danced to the song, Respect. Even though it was a goofy day with a late start and an emotional day with September 11th, 5B received compliments from all teachers about their behaviors and respect. See, I told you guys!! Don't give up on yourselves so easily! What a great day we had.
Hopefully you noticed the slideshow of pictures to the right of this post. These are pictures from the first day of school through this past Friday, September 11th. The slideshow inlcudes 5B homeroom time and all sections of literacy class. I'll try to keep it updated after I get a good number of photos. Parents, if you signed a paper saying you didn't want your child's photos to be on the Internet, and you happen to see one, PLEASE let me know. I tried to be careful about which students were shown and not shown. Thanks! I appreicate your help.
I thought I'd give you a little heads up for the upcoming events the next 2 weeks. This Wednesday is a 3-hour early out with a bus evacuation drill in the morning. Thursday and Friday will be goofy because 5th graders will begin MISIC testing. 5B has their first test for MISIC (math) on Friday, but the schedule will be goofy Thursday because another 5th grade section begins their testing. The following week will continue to be confusing with more MISIC testing and a field trip to the Norman Borlaug Farm on Friday, September 25th. I'll send a note home with the kids early this week as a reminder of these events.
Often times with schedule changes, students get a little out of whack (as do the teachers!!). So, we'll do what we can to help them out, but 5B will need to do their best to stay focused and continue the respectful attitudes they demonstrated last week. Have a great rest of the weekend! Thanks for being such fun, excited learners, 5B! Your proof that you checked the blog this weekend is to tell me who won the long awaited Cy-Hawk battle on Saturday!!

Great in Class....Not Always Outside of It....
Happy Thursday...Again, I must say students from 5B have been "wow"ing me in the classroom and in our homeroom behaviors. Unfortunately, I haven't heard the same reviews from other parts of their day. There was major talking happening in math today with Mrs. Kuhn, some issues at recess with playing fairly during football and some hurtful comments about students having "germs." 5B and I had a discussion about this at the end of the day. I know how respectful and caring 5B can be because I see it in literacy and homeroom time, especially the last few days. So, it's disppointing that students aren't being their best all day long. Now, of course, the situations mentioned probably do not involve every 5B student, but as a whole, we need to think of how we want to be treated before we say or do something, right???
Today was NOT a terrible day. It just seems like we're taking a few steps backwards with our behaviors. I know this will happen from time to time, and we'll move on and work on these areas. I just know this group of students is capable of being fabulous. So, like President Obama said, most important of all, "Don't let yourself down."
Your proof of reading the blog tonight is to ask your parents how to sing the song "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. Then I'd like to hear a short rendition of it in the morning!!! Thanks for all your work and effort towards being the best students you can be!

Great Day!
Today was full of energy and great listening! So proud of my 5B Angels (ding). Not a lot to report or share today except to remind students and parents that MISIC testing is coming up next week. This will add yet another wrinkle to our goofy schedule, but we'll figure it out. Remember to send back your band notes so Mrs. Jones knows who to work with next week for instrument try-outs.
Kids (and parents), I found a cool site you might want to try out if you want to give your brain a challenge. Go to www.microgames.info Look under Logic Games and click on 3D Logic. The levels start out WAY easy, but then it gets more and more difficult. It's a bit addicting. I made it to level 18 before I got stuck and needed a break. See what you can do! Parents should try some, too.
Have a great night! Tomorrow is actually a normal day! Can you believe that?

Tired Tuesday...
It is obvious 5B students had at least some fun over the long weekend because they were TOTALLY tired today. I shouldn't complain about students who are calm and quiet, but 5B was a little out of it after the excitement of their weekends. I guess I was a bit, too! We'll see what tomorrow brings with our energy level!
Today we made it a point to share President Obama's speech with the 5th graders. We weren't able to watch it live because of our goofy schedules, but we did share the speech with them at the end of the day. It was great to hear all of 5B's reactions and points they felt were important to take from the speech. The one that kept coming up was "don't let yourself down." I think that was a powerful message to take. When we think of any part of our school day, we should remember that phrase and ask ourselves that question, "Have I let myself down with this behavior, choice, action?" Hopefully, we'll be able to answer "no" proudly. I'll do my best to help you out in any way I can.
We finished up with the pre-band classes today as well. Students should have brought home a note explaining about band and a sheet that should be signed and returned whether students are going out for band or not. It's fun to see which instruments the kids try out for and which ones fit them the best. These notes should be back before next Tuesday.
Tomorrow 5th grade has a quiz in science over their vocabulary words. Hopefully, parents have seen students going over these words a few times. This is their first quiz in 5th grade. As President Obama explained, it is the students' responsibility to do their very best every time. Good luck studying!
Kids, I didn't get a chance to finish my horseback riding experience from the weekend. This will let me know if you've read the blog... ask me about "Spook...aka Splinter" in the morning before library. All I can say is that I'm glad I made it out alive!!!!
Have great evenings! See my 5B Blobs in the morning! Oh, remember that book orders are due tomorrow if you are interested in ordering! Thanks!

It's Finally Friday!
Read below to find out what 5B thinks is important about what we did this week in school....
We started our math groups (Kaylie)
We learned a symbol for connections "bam, bam" in reading class (Hailey)
Mrs. Walter said Mrs. Sorenson was the craziest teacher in the world (Sierra)
Certain people started TAG this week (Alex)
Dylan made friends with his cousin (Dylan)
We learned what writing is (Anna)
Today was perfect picture day (Kelsey)
Mrs. Sorenson makes us do weird stuff (Hanan)
It was Mrs. Schmitt's birthday yesterday and we made her do a funny dance (Kaylie)
We had a fantastic day to end the week (except for the time we stayed in at recess because of too much talking). I can't say everyday this week was as wonderful, but I'm glad we were able to end on a good note. We have super moments and not-so-super moments. We'll just keep working at it until it's natural! And I know this class is capable!
Have a great weekend. I think everyone was ready for an extra day of relaxation. Check back throughout the weekend for another post!

Wacky Wednesday
Wednesdays sort of throw us for a loop in 5th grade. This is the only day of the week that we have a goofed up schedule because of our specials. It messed up 5B students so much today that some students thought it was the end of the day at 12:00. They couldn't remember what they had for lunch for some reason?? The students aren't alone in trying to master the different classes and times depending on a certain day. Hang in there, kiddos. You'll get it figured out.
Switching classes has been going pretty smoothly. Other than forgetting a planner here or markers there, we're getting in down. Our biggest problem is holding onto our materials. If I had a quarter for every pencil box that drops, scattering about 100 items across the hallway, I would be one wealthy chick! We might need to transition into using large Ziploc bags if it takes too much longer. I do have to say though, in general, students are extremely helpful to each other when this happens to a classmate. Usually, several students offer to help gather up all the items. Quite a considerate bunch of angels (ding)!
Here's a quick rundown of what's happening in 5th grade classes... In reading, we're building our stamina for independent reading. We started at 4 minutes last week and are moving up to 8 minutes tomorrow. We just finished up a writing project using a computer program, Kidspiration. We'll be playing games with them tomorrow in class. In math, Mrs. Kuhn has assessed all students for unit 1, and the kids were introduced to "math groups" today. These groups will change based on each unit pretest. The kids seemed excited about it. Mrs. Halverson is gone this week due to a funeral and her son's wedding, but social studies and science must go on. Students are continuing a study of patriotism for social studies and erosion for science. Kids...this is your proof you've checked the blog... tomorrow morning, whisper in my ear 3 of your science vocabulary words. I know a test will be coming up sometime!
Finally, thanks to everyone who has been checking the blog out. It's great to check the "followers" list to see who has joined up. A few families seemed to struggle with the "follower" thing, so I'll send home a note with instructions by the end of the week for you. Nobody is required to become a follower. I just thought it was nice to see who was checking in on 5B!

Happy Monday!
I hope everyone was able to have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend. Since there wasn't much homework for 5th graders, they could spend the weekend doing whatever they wanted! Even though there wasn't a lot to do, I was impressed with the number of students that came to school this morning with notes in their planners from parents explaining that they gave them a kiss! The notes were so sweet and fun to read! You're never too old to let Mom or Dad know you love them! Check planners again tonight for a new activity!
Usually on Mondays, students come in a bit tired from busy weekends. That wasn't the case for 5B today. No Siree Bob. I spent quite a bit of the day reminding students about respectful behaviors and that blurting is not helpful for the class. Hopefully, my 5B Angels will be back on Tuesday:) Kids, this is your chance to prove you have read the blog. Tell your parents about the way I help remind you to simmer down. I'll know you told them if you ask them to become a "follower" by clicking the button towards the top of the screen. I'll check to see who did so. There is one student whose family is already a "follower" of the blog. You can have your mom or dad write a quick note in your planner!
Maybe make a point of checking the blog each night if you have time. I won't ALWAYS make a new post every night, but I often give reminders about what has been happening during the day, upcoming events and general information. For example, school pictures are on this Friday, September 4. Forms should be brought in this week or Friday morning if you are planning on ordering pictures from school.
Thanks for checking in. Have a great Monday night!

First Full Week!
Some teachers wonder what's going on in literacy class because of all the noise. Amber
Teachers love our 5B Blobs and Angels and how sophisticated we are. Kaylie
We have a funny teacher. Colten (Sweetiepants)
Colten got his name changed to Sweetiepants (look above). Katrina
Zach and Adam like to make shadow puppets. Alex
Mrs. Sorenson gives us bad homework (check planners). Adam
Kaylie forgets to write her name on papers in math class. Zach
We know 3 ways to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Anna
We learned some crazy ways to say the Pledge in Soc. Studies class. Kelsey
We know that "barbie" is the term used for inappropriate language and we have to say "oh lovely one" if we say "um" to Mrs. Sorenson. Karley
It's been a good week but also a long one. 5B students know how to have fun while they learn. Mrs. Sorenson

In School a Full Week!
We have officially made it through an entire week of school!! 5B students are getting the hang of switching classes. It takes us a little while to get all of our materials ready and lined up, but it's coming. We'll get it figured out.
In literacy class we've been talking about how to P.I.C.K. (Purpose, Interest, Comprehend, Know most the words) good fit books for ourselves. The kids have been bringing in "book bins" to hold good fit books (or magazines, newspapers, brochures, etc.) from anywhere they find them (my room, Mrs. Halverson's room, Mrs. Kuhn's room, home, library, public library, former teachers' rooms, etc.). It was great to see so many students excited about the books they are choosing. Some students find this task harder than others, but I look forward to helping students find books that are interesting to them and chosen for a specific purpose.
I've been reading the parent homework, In a Million Words or Less, and I am learning so many helpful and fun things about each 5B student. It sounds like I have a bunch of caring, sensitive, helpful, fun, hard-working students. Thank you so much for your honesty and thoughts about what will make your child feel comfortable and have a successful year! I'll do what I can to make it possible!
If there's ever anything you want to chat about, please get ahold of me using my email, calling, sending a note or even stopping in sometime! Remember, all of my contact information is on the magnet. Thanks!

First Day of Switching was a Success!
Wow, we did it!! 5B students successfully made it through a full and regular day of switching classes for Soc. St/Sci. and Math/Word Study. There were mixed feelings about how the day went. I thought it flew by, but a few students felt like it drug on. Can't make everybody happy, can we? In reading class, students learned the answer to a very important question today - What is reading? If you ask them, I'd watch out though... Stand back and cover your ears just to be careful.
I think the only homework students had was in math - bring home the family letter for unit 1 and in social studies - think of ideas for PATRIOTISM poster. We're taking it slow and easy on the kids these first few days and week.
Parents, don't forget YOUR homework that is due on Wednesday. If you are fretting about what is right to include, don't. All I'm hoping for is some insight on your child so we can have a fun and successful year!
Thanks for a fantastic Monday, 5B! You truly are little angels (ding)!

Rested Up for a Full Week?
Well, it's Sunday already. I've enjoyed resting a little bit after our first 2 days of school. 5B students definitely have energy and excitement for school. I'm extremely impressed with the behaviors, respect and listening I've seen my 5B students exhibit. Way to go, 5B Blobs! Of course, I'm hoping all 5B students explain the "blob" thing to your families so they don't think I'm being rude.
I'm excited for the students to start a full day of switching so they can get to know the other teachers better. I'll miss my little angels while they are in math, social studies, science and word study, but we'll have a group hug when we get back to homeroom.
I enjoyed my first 2 days of school. There were lots of laughs and smiles. I hope that continues for everyone. Thanks for a great beginning to the school year, 5B!!

What's Up in 5B?
Here are our 5B thoughts about the first few days of school....
5B is so lucky to have a crazy teacher.
We are the 5B blobs.
We are angels!
Some people are obsessed with "P".
Our teacher threw an apple at a student. Watch out for more to come!
Switching classes was cool.
Mrs. Walter called Mrs. Sorenson crazy!
Our principal never knows what to expect when she sees 5B.
School is a circus.
The first days were awesome.
The first day was awesome, but the 2nd day was boring - by Colten and Alex.
Zach feels short.
Kaylie told her teacher she didn't look good...but then said she was joking.
Karley smacked Mrs. Sorenson's leg.
Anna annoyed the class with her long list of pets during a circle name game.
Kaylie wants to steal Mrs. Sorenson's baby.
Time capsules are mysteriously hidden in the classroom.
We played the Big Booty game.
Mrs. Sorenson has a frog named Delbert in the front of the classroom.
We'll rest up this weekend, and then start a full week of switching classes on Monday!
More to come next week!

Final Hours of Summer
Well, we are down to the final hours of summer. I've been busy getting our classroom ready. Desks are arranged, information is laid out, books are on the shelf. Now all I need is the most important part of the classroom - MY STUDENTS!! Even though it's a bit stressful getting everything ready for a new school year, I'm feeling excited and anxious to see all of my fifth graders on Back to School Night. Enjoy your last hours!

Technology is Fabulous..... when it works...
I'm sitting in the same technology class as Monday. I have now updated my class webpage with newer techniques and information. But, boy oh boy, have I been frustrated getting things to work out. Just when I think I have things the way I want them, something goes wrong or shows up silly. This class is reminding me that technology truly is exciting and motivating, but it will also cause much stress and annoyances at times. Kids, remember to have patience when working on any type of computer at home or at school. Take a deep breath and come back to it later. Your teacher will need to practice this, too!!

Saying Goodbye to Summer
Well, we're about 2 weeks out from school starting. I'm feeling excited for a new school year like always but sad to see summer go. Having time this summer to get to know my new baby boy, Isaiah, has been wonderful. So, I'm guessing parents have the same torn feeling about the end of summer in their households. Always a happy and sad time of year! I've been in the classroom a few times to start putting our room together, so that gets me motivated and energized! In fact, I'm in a class right now as I type this blog entry. I've been updating my school web page, learning about blogs and wikis, and trying out pod casting. Technology is so exciting!
