Here We Go Again with the Weather!!

At least I got to see you for part of a day, 5B!! Grrr.. this weather is getting in the way of us building brain power. I'd like to have a word with Mother Nature! Oh, well, I guess this leaves more time for you to work on your stamina, practice for Radical Readers, and get your WW#3 done, huh?? Yeah, right... Most of you are outside enjoying the snow, hanging out at the Fitness Center or snuggled in on the couch watching TV or playing some kind of video games... am I right or what??

Well, keep in mind the assignments due for Tuesday (Radical Reader) and Wednesday (WW#3 draft) with this crazy snowstorm. Also, makes sure you share your ITBS with your parents tonight. I had quite a few incomplete assignments today, so I am going to be even pickier the next time I see you guys.

I found a cool website that helps students work on their MISIC skills from the fall. A few of you already know about this website because I showed it to you in class. Go ahead and explore the website. I can explain more about the numbers in class later on this week.

I'll know you checked the blog if you change these 2 complete sentences into 1 compound sentence. Don't forget the comma and correct conjuction.
Snow can be fun. It can also be annoying. Write it on a piece of paper and hand it to me when you come in.

See you HOPEFULLY on Tuesday. If not... I miss you already!

Good Start of the Day... Weak Ending

5B,
I gave Mrs. Halverson the letters you wrote about activities you enjoy in science or social studies. I know a few of you still need to hand them in, also. She felt happy to see how many of you liked doing the experiments and group work. So, now you need to prove to her that you should EARN those fun activities by showing Cadet Pride during them. OK? We OBVIOUSLY know how to show Cadet Pride when we want to because you saw the whopping number of pink slips our class has earned - 440!!! Wowser! We have a dance, pajama day and movie to look forward to if we continue to prove ourselves!!

Onto another topic.... Many of you showed interest in the "blobs" for our class after you saw that 2 of them had been donated by families. If your family is interested in donating one to the class, have them check out the link called "Blobs for Literacy Classroom" on the side of the blog. We want the 65cm sized ones. These are the green ones. If you get any smaller, they want fit with our desks or tables.

Also, I'm adding the link of that picture we were looking at today in class - the one that has something "wrong" with it.... If you try to open it at home and find out what is wrong, write it down on a piece of paper but DO NOT SHARE IT with anyone. Bring it to me tomorrow when you come in the classroom! That will be your proof of checking the blog tonight!!

See you all for a short day tomorrow!

Good Start to the Week...

Hey, there 5B Angels...(ding),
I guess we must have been working pretty well today because the day seemed to fly by, and it's already almost Tuesday. So, good work for making the day go so quickly!

Some reminders about this week...
Tuesday (tomorrow) - 1st Radical Readers!!! Jason, Brandon and Shania!!! Come with expression, fluency, excitement, books and costumes!! Can't Wait!!!!!
Wednesday - 3-hour early out (and working lunch, remember)
ASAP - finish puzzle pieces - come in the morning to finish please...
ASAP - return green conference notes to help us prepare for our student-led conferences
Any day this week - 2 Bloggers (Taylor and Joslin) do their jobs, On Deck person (Dawson) - counts pink slips
EVERYDAY - Work on Stamina by reading 25 - 30 minutes from your lexile books

Ok.. I'll know you checked the blog today if you look at the photo I have next to this post. Write down the ONE THING you see on a piece of paper. Is it a little kid, a big dog, a baby kitten, or something eslse? Be specific. We'll be talking about this in writing class Tuesday. It's pretty obvious to me, but you know, I am brilliant!! Hehehe.. Just KIDDING!

Weather, Weather, Weather!!!

Even though this week has been wild with weather and schedules, 5B has done a good job of keeping under control and displaying the Cadet Pride that makes our school proud!!

I know it's fun to have days off of school and extra time at home or with friends, but don't forget your responsibilities as a student, too. Keep in mind the homework you have due for tomorrow.
Reading - read from Lexile book - book due in 2 weeks
Writing - piece #3 to be worked on EACH night
Writing - Subject - Predicate assignment due FRIDAY
Math - Study Link due FRIDAY

I'll know you checked the blog because you'll write down the name of Mrs. McCabe's substitute on a piece of paper. You'll know HIS name if you check the colored letters throughout the blog. His name is Mr. ????????

Hopefully see you in the morning (at regular time) or at least for a late start! Watch the news, listen to the radio, check your texts to see what the weather will do to our Friday!!

Wow, Starting Another Week??

5B, I feel like every time I blink, another week has gone by and our time together just keeps getting shorter and shorter. Before I know it, I'll be a blubbering mess of tears, sending you off for the summer, wishing you well in 6th grade! Yikes, time is flying by this year.

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend. I have a few bits of information to share and celebrate with you.

The first big and exciting news is A BABY GIRL was born to Mrs. McCabe on Sunday! Yeh for the McCabe family. Her name is Livia Ann. She has dark hair and blue eyes. She weighs 8lbs. 8 oz. Yippee for Mrs. McCabe and her husband. As soon as I get a picture, I'll make sure to let you see it. Yes, we'll miss seeing Mrs. McCabe in the building, but I'm sure we're all very happy for their new family!!

The second news to celebrate is another special person. He also had a birthday this weekend. We actually celebrate it on Monday. He made a huge impact on our country and the world. I'll give you some hints, but I'm not going to tell you his name. That will be the way you proved you checked the blog. After going through my hints and even asking your parents for help, write down the name of this important man in history and give it to me as you walk in on Monday morning. OK??
Hints: Born on Jan. 15
Known for Civil Rights Movement,
Fought for Peace
Shared famous speech, "I Have a Dream...."
**If you're still unsure, check to the right of this post, and watch the video.

Other heads up... Let's see, Monday is the busy start to our week. So, make sure to check the Morning Message right away to see what you should be doing to get our morning moving smoothly. I'll have a job for you to work on after your science/soc. st. materials are out. Come in quickly, and get started.

OK. Get rested up. If there are not goofy weather days, this week will be our first FULL week since the beginning of December. Now, that's crazy!!

See you soon,
Mrs. Sorenson

Keep it UP, 5B!!

It's been a good week for us, 5B. Isaiah says "Great Work, 5B!" We definitely know HOW and WHEN to use respectful behaviors. What we will need to watch is whether we CHOOSE these behaviors. OK?

Remember that Mrs. Sovereign is coming in right away tomorrow for a review of routines. We'll have to let her see our bucket of pink slips. She'll be so impressed and proud of us!

Also, Friday is our Team Building day. We'll be doing an activity where we split the 5th grade in half. We'll be heading to Mrs. Wilson's room and the Discovery Center for our activities. So, it will be another busy morning!

I'll know you checked the blog if you come up with a GOAL NUMBER for our class. Make it reasonable but something we should have to work towards. Write it down on a piece of paper, and I'll ask you to share it after Mrs. Sovereign visits. We'll also chat about all of your ideas you shared with me at the end of the day. They sound like fun ways to celebrate!

C U 2MORO!! (Just showing off my texting skills!)

Well, 5B, we knew mistakes would happen...so, I guess a few started today. It wasn't a major move backwards from our OUTSTANDING start to 2011, but it was just enough to make us think about how easy it is to fall back into old habits or easily get off task. I also think that today's late-start added something to our "out of sorts" mood today. So, let's show ourselves and those around us that, sure, everyone makes mistakes, but it takes real Cadet Pride to LEARN from it and improve it for the next time:) K?? I honestly believe 5B has what it takes to hit "Perfection" plenty more times this year!! Bring it on, I dare you!!

Thanks for so many of you who got your report card envelopes back signed. If your family didn't have time, that's fine. Just return them as soon as you get a chance!

Also, I think there were a few of you who said you had some flat pieces for our Lego Land. Would you mind asking if that works out with your family to borrow them for a short time? If you can, just bring them in when our day starts on Wednesday. Thanks.

Ok.. something a little creative to prove you checked the blog... I'll know you checked the blog if you write down something you have enjoyed about being back at school over the past 5 days. It can be something from class, something about your friends, anything. Please make sure it is something you have truly enjoyed about being back. Write it on a regular-sized piece of paper. Put your name on it. THEN, crumple it up into a wad like a snowball. AFTER Dawson leads the Pledge, you are given permission to "chuck" it at me like we're in a snowball fight. You must be at your own chair/table when doing this. I don't want to get attacked too badly!!! We'll see if I survive the first 10 minutes of our day together??!! Wish me luck!!

See you soon!!

REPORT CARD DAY!!!!

Hey, there my 5B Angels who know what *Perfection* means!! Hope your weekends were relaxing, fun or whatever you were in the mood for! Boy, weekends go quickly, don't they? Well, I hope you shared with your families what amazing days we for our first week back to school. I can't stop bragging about you guys to all the other teachers! Keep it going!!! If these are the behaviors I see the rest of 3rd quarter, I'll have to put 4's all across everyone's report cards!!!!

As you noticed for the title of this blog, report card day is here!! As you come in to the class Monday morning, you will find several report cards on your desk. You'll see them in this order:
Regular Report Card
Math Report Card
Band Report Card (if you're in it)
Specials Report Card

So, you can see we have a lot to go over in a short amount of time Monday before P.E. and sending you off for the morning. Please come in the room, get out your Social Studies and Science materials, then start looking through your report cards. We'll go through them together, but I know you'll be a little excited to see how you did compared to last quarters. I saw quite a few behaviors and grades go up. There was an occasional dip for some students, but in general, you guys had a great quarter.

Ok... this got really long. I'll know you checked the blog if you do these steps in THIS ORDER....
1) Say "Good Morning" to me.
2) Go straight to desk and get out social st. and sci. materials
3) Look through report cards until attendance begins

See you soon!! Let's see if we can make it 5 DAYS with the same behavior we had the last 3 days!

Best Day EVER!!!!!

Well, it's official, 5B. The teachers chatted after school and feel that 5B had the absolute most amazing day of the school year! That's going to be pretty hard to beat. So, I guess, you know what you need to do in order to keep up this reputation. OMG! You should see how many Cadet Pride slips Mrs. Halverson brought over after school for you! I didn't put them in yet because I wanted you to count them up and be able to add to our "Character Building of Legos."

I'll know you checked the blog if you write down on a piece of paper or in your planner your guess of how many slips Mrs. Halverson brought over. Now, be realistic....she didn't bring over 100 of them!!! Think about what would be quite impressive for 5B as a class to earn in 1 class period. OK? I will ask you to share your guess after we do attendance. Then, I'll announce to everyone and you can start counting!

Also, please remember to keep working on WW#2. It is due next Friday, January 14 with no exceptions. So, this should be worked on outside of school in order to make some progress on it.

Thanks for an amazing day. It's too bad Ally and Joslin missed it. You'll have to let them know what a "perfect" day they missed. See you Friday morning!

Happy New Year....2011!!

5B,
You came in today with the same fun and enthusiasm that I have come to love about you! It was so great to see smiles on your faces and all of the hugs I got! Thanks for making our first day back so enjoyable. I can't wait to continue with great Cadet Pride behaviors and actually get to hear more about your vacations and stories.

You'll have to share with your families what your snowpeople look like. I found them quite entertaining to look at as I walked by your lockers. They are so "you."

Thursday will be a regular day. We'll start right away with social studies and science classes at 8:45, so that's why it was so nice to spend all morning with you today! Man, I missed you guys, your comments, your funny actions and energy! So, bring on more of that energy for Day 2. Often times you're more tired the 2nd day. We'll see.

I'll know you checked the blog either from home tonight or from the Discovery Center in the morning if you write down the BEST part of your vacation and the WORST part of your vacation on a piece of paper (not in your planner). Hand it to me when you come into the room in the morning. We'll see if taking a vacation from blog checking will make you rusty at checking it. Maybe there will even be a little reward for checking it:)
