What a super day in 5th grade today! Maybe it's all that rest or home time you've been having, but you were definitely ready to learn today. Our Skype session with Ranger Cara went fantastic! She did an amazing job sharing all of her information with us. Based on chatting with 5B, I think a lot of people have ideas for inquiry projects or are at least interested in finding out more about Yellowstone's facts! Here's a screenshot from seeing Old Faithful on the live webcam at 12:33 p.m. today from our classroom!
I'm looking for a group of students who would be willing to make an online thank you card for Ranger Cara. I'd like a group from 5A, 5B and 5C. I'll share the website with you on Friday, so if you're interested in learning it/playing with it, you can start on it before the weekend! I think Ranger Cara would love to hear back from us. Super discussions about more inquiry projects today in literacy, too. Music class went wonderfully! What an amazing day back.
The only improvement that I could see happening would have been the project Mrs. McCabe assigned you to record/do random acts of kindness. It was a bit disappointing that out of 23 students and 14 days worth of opportunities (that could equal 322 acts) we only had about 5 - 6 students had their Mission Impossible folders here, and that only maybe 3 - 4 had written them down like assigned. Hmmmmm... Does that mean 5B doesn't care about others? Does that mean 5B doesn't know how to show responsibility? I'd like to say, "Absolutely NOT", but actions do speak for you... So, Mrs. McCabe did give you an opportunity to fix your boo-boo of not showing you care or not being responsible. I know I would want to make sure to show my Cadet Pride when I get a 2nd chance to prove it... What will you do?? I guess we'll see:)
Well, I guess we know why this week flew by, don't we??? Tomorrow is already Friday!! Werid!
I'll know you checked the blog if you draw a heart and put a name of something you care about in it. It could be a family member, friend, pet, Justin Bieber, etc. Hand it to me when you come in (make sure your name is on it!) I'm going to give those of you who are checking the blog -like you're supposed to a little something special for your constant responsibility and respect for directions:)
Oh, and check out Old Faithfuls's Live Webcam under "Global Classrooms". Also, I added a website that Greta shared with me. It's like Rosetta Stone for learning languages but it's free and you can do it from home! So, try them out and enjoy.
Let's have a PHENOMENAL Friday to end a Wacky Week!!

Weird Week??????
Well,
I'm guessing we all should feel rested and ready to learn something new by THURSDAY at least!! I'd love to try out that zoom.us app with you guys. If you have a device that can download the zoom.us app, ask your families if you can add it. It's free! I'll set up a "meeting" from like 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. today. Of course, we won't meet that long, but I'll keep mine up to see how many people are able to give it a try. If you have it, all you have to do is click the "join" button and put in the ID number listed below:
887 599 441
This will let us all chat together at the same time. I'll have my laptop up and running to see who all gets a chance to try it out. I'd love to see how well it really works! This is maybe a new way to have class for 5B!!! Too cool!
I was so bummed we missed our Skype session with the Yellowstone National Park Ranger today:( I let her know that we weren't in school, and she rearranged her whole schedule for tomorrow to make it up with us!!!! Soooo nice!! I hope we are at school on time and able to meet up with her. She has all sorts of connections (fist, fist) to our Theme: May the Force be with NATURE....
I'll know you checked the blog if you ask me "What time are we Skyping with the Park Ranger today?"
If you have a Coffee Talk for either Wednesday OR Thursday, be ready for Thursday, ok? I'll be ready with the "coffee". You be ready with the discussion and thinking from the assigned pages!
Hope to see you soon - either trying out the zoom.us thing or Thursday morning! Stay warm!

Crazy Start to the Week....and More to Come..
5B had a tough start getting back into "school mode" the first 1/2 hour or so, but after that, WATCH OUT, here comes 5B Rock Stars again!! Way to turn around the Cadet Pride and behaviors.
The Super Hero presentations started off so great with IA and CT. I wish we could make things work to meet again with them. I'm curious what the rest of theirs look like:)
I know my son is going to be home tomorrow from daycare, so I'm not sure if I will be at school or not. Well, depending on this weather, no one may be at school??? Anyway, I just wanted to give you a heads-up that you may have a sub on Wednesday. If that's the case, be sure to show him/her the 5B I saw today after the reminders about listening, ok? Make me proud and leave an amazing impression for someone who subs. But who knows, I may be here, too.
A few reminders...
1) A note for signing up for conferences came during band time, so I held onto it for Wednesday. It's the note that reminds parents how to sign up for conferences online. I'll go over it with you (or the sub will if I have one) on Wednesday. But if you have a brother or sister in the elementary, they should've brought his/her home today after school.
2) Coffee Talk - Storm Runners! Can't wait to hear/see your discussion for this week.
3) May be Skyping with Yellowstone National Park Ranger on Wednesday, depending if we are here or not, or if I'm here or not?? Too many "ifs"... that's the only thing I don't like about this crazy weather!!
**I'll know you checked the blog if you send me a quick email or Google Doc sending Isaiah "get well" wishes. That's a nice caring act, right? You can even count it as one of your 14 days of Random Acts of Kindness for Mrs. McCabe's Mission Impossible... DUE ON THURSDAY OF THIS WEEK!!!!!! Keep in mind... a Caring Heart is probably one of the most important parts of your body:)
Hope to see you tomorrow...???
Missed You...but Fun to Have Extra Day Off
Well 5B,
I enjoyed sleeping in and then finding out we had a little extra home time today:) How about you guys? We will definitely need to do some extra work to get caught up from Friday's field trip and now our ice/snow day today. Be sure to watch the news channels for tomorrow morning, too. I'm not sure our gravel roads are quite ready/safe for bus travels after more cool weather over night!
We have plans to share our Super Heroes with our CT friends on Tuesday, so if you brought yours home, I'd LOVE it if you could bring it back for Tuesday's sharing. If it doesn't work, then we'll just show them a picture we took of your project. Not quite the same, but it'll be the best we can do if you don't have it here.
If you check the blog, you'll see right next to the word "Home" under all of our Followers, you'll see the words "Super Heros". Click on that to see our class photos and all of the projects that came in on Friday! So proud of them! You'll have to correct me if I got your Super Hero's name wrong. Ok? I did my best to remember.
I'll know you checked the blog if you can come up with different names of categories that we can suggest for our Super Hero voting. (Examples could be Most Colorful Costume, Weirdest Name, Coolest Sidekick, Most Beautiful, Coolest Gadgets). I'd love a list of as many as you think fit our Super Heroes!
Also, since our Monday was taken from us, our Team Competition will take place Tuesday morning! I'm guessing our counts will be MUCH lower than last time since you are back to only collecting for 1 week! May the strongest team win this week! Good luck to the Unexpected, That One Team, the Nike's and of course, last week's champions, the White Waffles!
See you Tuesday!! Remember, bring Super Heroes if you can. Oh, also, it's a Group Band day. Don't forget your instruments.

Late Post for Tonight...Sorry...
Hey there 5B Super Heroes, (Dun, Dun, Dun, Dunnnnn)!
Sorry it's late for posting. But at least we have a 2-hour late start...so you can sleep in! And be watching the school website or news channels or many of you get text alerts for weather stuff. Who knows? The roads may not be safe enough after 2 hours...so, make sure to watch for updates if school changes from a late start to cancellation. OK? I'll miss you if that's the case!
I didn't have any Internet connection (fist, fist) at my house for most of the day. It just finally came back on... Not sure if it's the ice/snow/rain stuff or just bad luck with technology:) You know how much I LOVE technology....as long as it's working!!
I hope you shared with your families the fun that was had on Friday with the field trip and Super Hero sharing! I am trying to get the photos and short videos posted on Animoto videos and on the 2nd tab at the top of the blog called, "5B Super Hero Projects". My laptop and the Animoto app have not been very friendly to me this weekend. So, I'll just keep trying to get them shared with you!
They were soooooooo amazing! Your creativity with drawings, designs, actual materials, sidekicks, qualities and of course, theme songs ROCKED this world!!
We'll be sharing them with our CT friends on Tuesday! I heard theirs are awesome, too! Then, Wednesday we have another Skype session with a Park Ranger from Wyoming!! It's going to be another globally connecting (fist, fist) week!!!
Have a fun night and extra sleep in the morning! I'll know you checked the blog if you tell me what time you went to bed on Sunday night knowing you didn't have school on time for Monday! I'll tell you about me, too! I'm going to watch a movie now! Yippee!

Short but Busy Day!
Wow, I know today was a 1/2 day of school, but it seemed to go even faster than normal! I hope everyone had fun afternoons doing things! I was busy WORKING like crazy! But it's great because I had a lot of time to look at work from what you've done in literacy and make plans for us to work, work, work on all sorts of strategies!! Yippee!!
The dance moves from the Memphis and Greta's blog post were hilarious and fun to watch! We definitely need a little dance party each week in here! You guys "gots da' moves!"
Reminder for Friday!!!!
Play at UNI: Be at school by 8:00 in the classroom! Have lunch with you. Bring devices you feel comfortable/safe with you. Wear Crestwood or Cadet type clothing or colors to promote and be role models for our grade and elementary school.
Super Hero Projects: LOVED the 3 that came in today! Teachers stopped by our room after school today and thought they were fantastic! I'm thinking we'll be needing time next week to do some more sharing with them, not just on Friday after the play! Remember to get that "theme song" down to share with us!
We've had some great moments this week, but our chattiness and self-control needs to be a PRIORITY everyday, every class, every moment. Think about the Mission Impossible for 14 days of caring. Showing others you think of them and their learning, would be a super way to show you care. Right?
Ok.. Dress warmly again tomorrow...I'm sure you'll be outside. Also, the Discovery Center will be closed Thursday and Friday mornings, so you won't be able to check the blog there. Please pass this onto your classmates. The cafeteria aides will not let you come down for any reason. So, you'll have to come in quickly and grab a computer to check the blog if you couldn't do it at home. Pass this onto others..
I'll know you checked the blog if you come straight in, go to Read to Self or Work on Writing. Those blue tickets sure to add up for something as simple as checking the blog:)

I Will Carry On His Dream....
What a superb day with 5B and all 5th graders! I am so impressed with the seriousness and sharing that we had today about Martin Luther King, Jr. I'm sure he would be proud of all of you, too. I can't wait to "see" more of our past when we take our trip to UNI Friday for the Rosa Parks' story. We'll chat more about lunches and techie things you want to bring.
Congrats to the first winning team of the new round of competitions: The WHITE WAFFLES!!
Remember Coffee Talks this WEEK!
We have ooVoo activities with our CT friends tomorrow again! Get your thinking caps on for this next activity! Also, we'll get to share our Super Hero Prototypes with them too after we get them handed in, so keep working on those! I heard someone in CT actually made a real-life costumes! Did any of you attempt this?? Whoa??
We'll be changing desks this week, so I'll know you checked the blog if you write down which tables/areas you have NOT sat in yet this year! Make sure your name is on it, ok?
It's short...but sweet... have a great night and see you for another supercalifragilisticespialidocious day!!

Gorgeous...then Windy... then FREEZING!!!
Wow,
Our midwestern weather can surely keep up on our toes, can't it?! Be sure to wear hats, mittens, boots, snow pants, etc. to school for recess time. That wind can be a bugger! Having Cadet Pride means making smart choices about what to wear as well as being a respectful and responsible student!
We have NEW TEAM competitions that have started and MONDAY is our FIRST ticket counting ceremony! I think these will be super fun since we have a variety of people, interests, and personalities on each team this time! I love the open arms that were welcoming members in on Thursday when you were making your teams! Keep up that open-minded thinking, too!
We'll do attendance and pledge BEFORE counting up tickets. AND there are new class jobs to talk about, so we'll need to listen up and be ready for more Cadet Pride! I'll be handing out tickets PRIOR to the counting, so you never know how many more you can earn before the counting actually begins!!
Good luck to the White Waffles, That One Team, The Unexpected and the Nikes!
Major things to be thinking about for this week!
ALL WEEK: Working on your SUPER HERO PROTOTYPES to bring in on FRIDAY!!!!!!!! Have families help if you need. If you are not responsible enough to follow the directions and complete this project by its due date, you will not be allowed to participate in our activity that day:( Cadet Pride!!
Monday: Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday is celebrated today!!! So cool that we'll be going to the play on Friday to remember others who helped carry out his DREAM...
Monday: Mission Impossible - Random Acts of Caring Challenge - Who might be your target today?
Tuesday: Band!

Friday: Mission Impossible - Random Acts of Caring Challenge - Who might be your target today?
Ok.. I'll know you checked the blog if.. you tell me ONE thing about your weekend, put your super hero picture up, and go STRAIGHT to your desk /seat and Read to Self! This will be worth 3 yellow tickets to add to your team's container!! I gave 3 jobs, worth 3 tickets!! Or if the 3 jobs are done SOOO smoothly, I may just turn it into a blue ticket for amazing responsibility!
Have a great night!
Let the games begin!!!

Published Author Visits 5B!
5B,
Be sure to tell your family about our opportunity to have a former 5B student and published poet come into our classroom and share her writing and suggestions for us! I feel honored to have Amanda want to come back and share. Teachers love to stay connected (fist, fist - gotcha, I bet) to students not only during the year, but over years and years and years! Maybe you'll stop back in your 5B homeroom class years from now! Yah, I'll probably have gray hair, using a walker and barely able to hear you, but I'd still love it!
Class Team Competitions: After seeing how our class was choosing teams today, it made me realize that the one area that 5B could work on would be "openness to others". I think we have a caring bunch of students in 5B for sure... You know it by our letters/cards we're getting back from Cresco people. However, it seems we may be losing patience for our own classmates. It's definitely like a family in here. Sometimes we get along with our siblings/family, sometimes we don't, but no matter what, we stick together as a family and support each other. SO... I've decided to do a combination of you choosing teams and ME helping! When we have our morning time, I'll explain more and be ready to say, "GAME ON!" once again!
Reminders:
Earthquake group - Coffee Talk THURSDAY (you changed it, remember!!)
The Big Wave group - Coffee Talk Friday
Work on Super Hero Prototypes - due Friday, Jan. 25 (we'll share them with CT friends, too)
Proof for checking the blog...
I'll know you checked the blog tonight (or in the morning) if you think of someone in our class that you don't usually choose to chat with, work with, hang out with, sit with at lunch, etc. Write their name on a piece of paper, and come up with something positive about them. Anything.. maybe it's that they are quiet in line. Maybe they have a nice smile. Maybe they are funny at times. Maybe they know a lot about a certain topic. No matter what it is, try to be open to seeing that getting to know all of our classmates is the first step to truly feeling like a 5B Family. And this is your "mama" talking:)

A Full Week In?? Wow!
I saw on the survey that we still have a huge majority that enjoys this schedule! So, maybe that's why it feels like time is flying by so quickly! Sorry to the 2 people who aren't fond of this new schedule... You only have a 1/2 of a year to live through it... :(
I LOVED what I saw from the presentation slides of your CT friends and you today! I thought each slide looked like it showed off each group's/person's personalities with the interests and the funny photos!
Remember, the competition is ON! I'm looking for the group that knows the MOST about their classmates from CT. We will have a little showdown next week to prove who knows them the best - just as well as our 5B classmates! Now that you have their emails, I'm fine if you send something to them on your own. This is another great way to get to know each other.
You'll be getting one more class time to work with your CT friends to finish your presentation. Then, YOUR 5B group will share it with the class so we ALL can learn about our CT classmates! I can probably tell you 25 details about Mrs. Petroski just from emailing, ooVoo and Skype meetings. We LOVE to communicate and plan out activities for both classes!
SURPRISE for WEDNESDAY! WE have a guest speaker coming into 5B's class tomorrow! I won't tell you WHO it is or WHY he/she is coming though. I'll make you wait it out until the arrival! But brainstorm who could this individual be??? and why are they visiting us? He/she is taking time out of their personal schedule to share with us, so continue showing that Cadet Pride I've been seeing so well!
I'll know you checked the blog if you visit this link: CLICK HERE! Play around and tell me what it was about! I had fun playing! Maybe you will, too!

He/she is taking time out of their personal schedule to share with us, so continue showing that Cadet Pride I've been seeing so well!
I'll know you checked the blog if you visit this link: CLICK HERE! Play around and tell me what it was about! I had fun playing! Maybe you will, too!

Marvelous Monday
Great way start a week, 5B! I've noticed more people have voted about the new schedule. Nobody seems to dislike it, so that must be a good change in general! Yippee for all of us!
I'm running some errands and will be out of town tonight, so I'll keep it short again.
Reminders for this week and upcoming events:
Coffee Talk (bring mugs) Groups - for Avalanche (Tues.), Storm Runners (Wed.), Earthquake/Big Wave (Fri.)
Super Hero Prototypes - LOVE the ideas I'm hearing from you! I've heard about stuffed animals, dolls, cardboard and even real fabric!!! Wow! Love the creativity and the names are super, too! Remember, these are due to our classroom for the Super Hero Development Group Meeting on Friday, January 25!
UNI Play, Rosa Parks' Story - A note will be coming home about this later this week, but a heads up that we'll be asking you to come in a bit earlier that day (before 8:25) and probably bringing your own lunch (if possible). This will give you and your family a chance to plan out some things.
Oh, and tomorrow is our ooVoo chat with Connecticut friends and continuing our presentations on our similarities and differences. Be ready to find out more about your global classmates!
I'll know you checked the blog if tell me the names of your Connecticut partners from last Tuesday (the ones we set you up with originally - not the ones you joined in on if your account was working). Let' see how well you know your global classmates!!!
Peace Out, Homeys!

Ready for Another Full Week with New Schedules?
Happy Sunday (or Monday if you're reading this before school)!
Based on what the votes say on the side of the blog, we have the majority of the class either liking or loving the new schedule change. A few people are undecided and can "get into things" a bit more as time goes on. I have enjoyed it, too. However, I do have to get used to not seeing you guys much in the morning until like 11:00 o'clock... My babies... leave me... But ok, I'll live!
I've really enjoyed our "tech time" this week. This will probably be my favorite change to our schedule. I love the excitement I see from you when you're figuring out something new and are able to teach others about it! Now, that's what I call LEARNING!!
The only complaint I've noticed/heard from 5B students is either they think it's the end of the day after math class (like our old schedule), or they are starving during literacy in the afternoon (thinking that we're about to go to lunch:) Isn't that funny how your body and mind gets used to something! If your family wants to donate some snacks for our afternoon "hungry" times, just bring them on in. Of course, that is completely optional. We've sincerely appreciated the snacks in the past, so thanks whether you have brought them any time during the year.
A couple reminders for the week:
Monday - Report Cards come home TODAY! Also, Math is right away, so be sure to have that homework done!
Tuesday: Avalanche Coffee Talk, and more ooVoo with CT friends about how similar or different you are (bring your coffee mug) and Chase may be back today...not for sure though
Wednesday: Storm Runners Coffee Talk (bring your coffee mug)
Thursday/Friday: Normal for now:) But that never stays too long!
I'll know you checked the blog if you watch the Martin Luther King, Jr. Animoto again from 5A and 5C. The link is under the Technology Projects. Write down ONE of the statements they felt are important to pass along as we remember how Martin Luther King, Jr. affected our lives today. Share it with me in the morning. Remember, his birthday is coming up next Monday.

What's Your Feeling About the New Schedule?
Well, we're up to Friday with our new schedule. Most people seem to be getting used to it except everyone seems to be hungry during literacy (thinking that we'll be going to lunch soon)!
I'll know you checked the blog if you fill out the survey to the right of the blog. Then, of course, tell me which one you voted for, ok?
Make sure to share the Super Hero project with your families. I can't WAIT to see what your prototypes will look like! Remember, you need to include the requirements on the direction page. If you or your family has any questions, just call, email or ask:)
Also, remember to be taking pictures or finding pictures of you or things you like for your partner project with CT friends. The slideshows you started on Tuesday will be continued this next Tuesday. Then you'll be responsible for helping the rest of your class to learn about your partners! The power of technology and connecting to others will help you find friends in faraway places! I've told you how much I enjoy chatting with Mrs. Petroski! She and I have SO MUCH in common. It's too crazy!
Have a great night. Watch the weather. It's supposed to be foggy in the morning, so listening for school updates. And please be sure to be wearing clothing that make sense for this weather. If you don't have a winter coat, you will be sent inside. I've chatted with a few of you about this already.
Think before you leave your house, ok?!

First WOW Wednesday of 2013!!
5B is on a roll!! Every teacher you saw today said how fantastic the class was! So proud of everyone. Maybe we all just needed a little rest and time off, ya think? I LOVE how the new schedule is making our days go by so quickly. It seems like our morning flies by and lunch is here before we know it:)
The last 2 days of literacy rounds have been pretty smooth, too. We're not quite at 100% yet though, since I've seen people chatting and being a little off task at times, but, hey, we'll get there with some reminders!
Can you believe tomorrow is already Thursday?? Goodness, things are really moving along!
A couple of reminders for you...
#1: If you have December Book-It slips, bring them by Friday.
#2: If you are feeling hungry, see if your family wants to donate some snacks to keep our energy levels going.
#3: Start thinking of what your SUPER HERO will look like, ask your family if they'll help, and start thinking of materials you might use!
#4: Avoid the GERMS!!! Remember all of our sickees with the flu bug?? Wash and sanitize hands when you get a chance to help prevent the spreading.
There will be an assignment waiting for you at your spots in the morning when you come in! This will be your way of checking the blog. When you come in say, "I have SUPER HERO power! - Dun, Dun, Dun, Dunnnn" (that's the song we were singing today:)
We have music on Thursday, so that will shorten up our Tech Time tomorrow, so we'll have to move quickly to find out about the technology projects that we'll get to start on!

FANTASTIC DAY with CADET PRIDE!
2013 has proven to be a SUPER example of Cadet Pride. Our schedule ran smoothly with switching in the morning and literacy in the afternoon. 5B (and the other 5th grades) really adjusted well to the new schedule. So glad it worked well:)
I'll keep it short since I've got oodles to do tonight! I'll know you checked the blog if you can tell me at ONE quality you think any true Super Hero should have. Share it with me as you come in!
See you soon for another amazing day!
Peace Out!

Happy to See Our 5B Family Again!
Well, we made it through a WHOLE DAY!! It was a pretty easy day, I'd have to say! But tomorrow will be a real test of how well we can transition into our new schedule and changes for 2013. Remember to share with your families the new changes/schedule. Also, if you have a Book-It for December, bring it in tomorrow. I'll get the January calendars to you on Tuesday.
I'll keep it short tonight since Isaiah is needing some bath-time help:) But a little heads up for tomorrow is that we'll be chatting with our Connecticut friends for another "Get to Know You" session. See if you can remember any of the names of the students from the last time you chatted. We'll be getting to know them more. Be thinking of some topics about you that you can share with them, ok?
Also, I'll know you checked the blog if you tell me at least ONE of the Super Heroes you see below! Remember, we are the 5B Super Heroes! Attendance will go nice and smooth if you remember to drag your Super Hero picture to your spot. Daniel will have a easy time getting attendance started if you help him with that part, ok?

We'll watch our Cadet Pride Sock Puppets right away after attendance and pledge, so we can continue showing off our "stuff" in 2013! Also, remember, we'll start our switching right away at 9:00, so I'll have to send you off shortly....sniff, sniff, tear drop.... I'll miss you....

Welcome Back in 2013, 5B!!!!!
Man, time flies when you're relaxing, chilling out, opening presents, hanging out with friends/family, and sleeping in, doesn't it?!! I would always love more time with my family, but I do miss my 5B Family, too! I can't WAIT to hear about your vacations and stories.
We'll take Monday pretty slowly since we never got to end the 2012 year properly with the snow and wind. We will get work caught up, wrap up 2012 activities and see if Santa stopped by even if you didn't have your stockings hung up at school:) We also have Christmas and holiday cards that never got sent out, so we can finish those up as "Happy New Year" cards. We left the room in quite a mess, so it will be a bit of a "clean-up" day, too.
Also, we will have a MAJOR change when we come back! We'll talk about it later on Monday, but it's a big one, baby!! I think you'll enjoy what the teachers have planned! It will be an entirely different schedule! But we won't start it until Tuesday, so don't freak out on us, ok? But it is a BIG change!
Man, I just feel like you guys have probably grown and changed since I last saw you! I saw a few of you over break:) I got emails from many of you at some point or another, and that was great. Sorry if I didn't write back to you....busy, busy, busy!
Isaiah has missed hearing about you all, too. He's going to write message below. Your job will be to determine WHAT you think he is writing to you!

Ok.. so, there you have it! Isaiah has shared his thoughts with you all! This is your proof of checking the first blog of 2013!! Either write it down and give it to me or just tell me when I see your smiling face in the morning:)
Also, start thinking what this big change will be! Remember, we are the class of 2020, and we need to think of ourselves as "global learners"!!! So what changes will 2013 bring us??
