Wonderful Week We Had... Can't Wait for Another One:)

5B,
What a great weekend of weather...well, wait, I guess Friday and Sunday were great... Saturday... a bit dreary, huh?

I am feeling so impressed with last week's fantastic improvements with the little parts of our day that were throwing us off!  Transitions were better for most students, our end of the day and beginning of the day routines were smooth and moved quickly!  I can't wait to see what your substitute teacher has to say on Monday about the amazing class he/she is about to see!  Make yourselves (and me) proud, 5B!

Ok.. so here are some heads up for Monday!
1)  Dress Up Day:  Favorite Team or Jersey Day - be a part of the school and show Cadet Pride by participating!
2)  Meet with Global Classmates again!  Continue your Google Doc Posters!  Yeh!  I'm sad I'll miss it:(
3)  Guidance Class with Mrs. McCabe - yeh!
4)  Band Lessons - check your times!
5)  Book Orders - MUST be in on Monday if you want the deals in September issues.  I can't wait one day more, sorry:)  Give to Mrs. Bodermann.
6)  Keeping the same jobs as last week, except for the Cadet Pride tickets.  Bradley and Jasmine will need to count early in the week.  The next 2 people will be asked later in the week.

As you can see, there are several other events going on during Monday, so be ready for all of the learning, too!

I'll be using the Smartboard a lot with the sub on Monday, so if he/she needs any help, please be willing, polite and offer Smartboard help when needed, ok, my little 5B Rockstars! Remember, I just plug and unplug the projector cord if the screen stays blue.  That's the loud buzzing noise that happens so often.

I'll know you checked the blog today, if when you come in Monday morning, RIGHT AWAY, send me an email from your iPad that let's me know what kind of day you plan to have and how proud I'll be to hear about it when I return with the rest of the 5th graders:)

Have a great start to your week!  Sorry I'll be missing you!

Thurrific Thursday!!!

I know this may be getting old....but 5B, you have had a FABULOUS week!  You really turned around the behaviors at the end of the day both yesterday and today!!  Way to GO!!  Here's one of the videos I took from a 5B iPad!  Great job as scientists for taking photos and video-taping for later observations and recording data!

Thanks to Bradley's videography:)

Keep up the great work, 5B!  I'll know you checked the blog tonight if you ask me, "So, where's my new home going to be, Mrs. Sorenson?"  It's about time we give ourselves a chance to find a new spot to call home, so calling the moving vans:)

Reminders for Next Week:
Homecoming Note:  Dress Up Days - Monday - Friday
Monday: Mrs. Sorenson gone with 5th graders to Elkader!
Tuesday:  Book-It Kick Off!  Parents come in to read with kiddos!  2:40 - 3:10
Friday:  3-hour early out for Homecoming, Parade shortly after dismissal, football game

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY!

5B,
You really turned it around today!  You were on top of the world with behaviors!
I can see we will be able to do SO MANY great activities and opportunities since our behaviors are so easily fixed when there are mistakes! Yeehaw, baby!!

I've been in meetings all afternoon...missing you... that's for sure:)  I hope your afternoons and evenings turn out ok.  I heard some of you were going to the fitness center, some to ride bikes, other hang out and watch tv/play video game, etc.  Then I know tonight some of you have some religion classes!  So, I'm sure you'll be wiped tomorrow with all of your afternoon/evening duties!

But with all you have going on, PLEASE remember your water collection sample.  We won't be able to complete our observations, data collection, and recording if we don't have samples to start with:) And if you DO use toilet water...... be sure it's an empty toilet bowl before collecting your samples...OK?? Ewwwww....

Remember, any water sites will work:  faucets in and out of the house, river, stream, pond, well water, water from the fridge dispenser, bath water, puddles, etc.

The more of a variety, the better we get to practice our scientific discoveries!

Be sure to go over your Class Dojo information with your families.  There area a lot of points be awarded for great behavior. Keep it up - especially after a day like today!

BIG HEADS UP...
I will NOT be at school right away in the morning.  Mrs. Bodermann will be there to oversee Ashton and Haylee get the morning routine started.  I'd LOVE to hear how amazing our morning was when I get back around 9:00. Mrs. Bodermann will read from Swear to Howdy.  So try to remember the last time you read with your substitute a few weeks ago.

Mrs. Bodermann will know you checked the blog if you do the following...
1) Check your attendance face
2) Grab out a pencil
3) Have out your Pen Pal Letter (should be at your spot in the morning)
4) Wait like a little angel for Mrs. Bodermann to give you the name of your 5th grade pen pal from Iowa!  Yeh!!!

See you soon...
Oh...and if you want the the video for the cup song from Paeytn, I sent it to everyone's email:)

AWESOME START....Low...Finish.....

5B!  My goodness this morning was A-MAZ-ING!!!  Keep it coming!!!  What great effort towards your MISIC tests, too!  Couldn't ask for a better morning!!!!  Way to go!
Then... after math...I'm not sure what exactly happens... It's kind of a roller coaster...  Science time...into planner time??? Yikes!!  Behaviors seem to go down, down, down...

So.. let's make that a goal for 5B.  We obviously have fantastic models from all morning long.  Your Class Dojo accounts were quite active today with Mrs. Bodermann helping monitor.  Be sure to check it out and see what your overall percent was today.  I'll send home the note for your families on Wednesday - the one we should have had time for today..... ;(

Congrats to the students who earned the opportunity to go on special field trip next Monday, Sept. 30 to Elkader for STEM activities:  Taylor and Jasmine!  Yeh!

Keeping it shorter... Remember tomorrow is a 3-hour early out.  I'll know you checked the blog if you watch this YouTube video.  If you don't know the cup song or cup clapping, watch it a few times and get the beat.  We'll try this tomorrow as a class.

Quick One Tonight:)

What a Marvelous Monday for everyone!  From start to finish, 5B had great listening. Tomorrow I'll be setting up a way for you and your families to check how fabulous you really are each day!  If you have heard of or used Class Dojo, then you'll be familiar with what I'm going to show you!!

Hopefully the Band Night goes well for you!  Good luck with your instrument choosing.

Today's meeting with Connecticut went excellent.  It sounds/looks like you are already getting to know your Global Classmates better after one day of projects!  I'm hoping we'll meet again by Friday of this week to continue your posters!

BIG REMINDER - I FORGOT THIS ON OUR PLANNERS:)
We have our last MISIC test on Tuesday (tomorrow) for Reading.  You can bring a healthy snack again to have during the testing if you wish!  Sorry I forgot to remind you!

Check your emails/parent emails for reminders on homework, too!

I got home late from some meetings, so I need to get supper going for little man.  Have a good night and let's continue the excellent behaviors with a Terrific Tuesday (although it will be Twisted up due to MISIC testing)

I'll know you checked the blog if you check out the Class Dojo avatars (critters) and decide which one you think best represents YOU!  Draw it out and be able to explain WHY:)  I can't wait to hear your explanations.  Have a great night - my 5B Super Models!  (Strike a Pose!)

Fantastic Friday Field Trip and Harvest Fest Weekend!

5B,
What an INSPIRING DAY we had last Friday.  I have to say I am overly impressed with your interest and excitement you showed each of the presenters.  Look at the list below of all that you said you learned (and much more...but I had to stop you):

I learned that Norman Borlaug saved at least 2 billion people from hunger.
I learned Norman had 2 sisters.
I learned that Norman didn't have faucets like we do today.
I learned that Norman didn't have indoor plumbing or phones like today.
I learned that Norman was the last one to take a bath on Saturday nights.
I learned that Norman Borlaug's nickname is Norm.
I learned that Norman Borlaug went to a one room school house for 8 years.
I learned that in Norman Borlaug's one room school house, the younger kids sat in front while the older kids sat in back.
I learned that Norman almost died in a snow storm but his cousin, Sina, saved him.
I learned Norman's sisters had to get the eggs from the chickens as chores.
I learned Norman and his dad had to do all outdoors work and the mom and sisters did most of the indoor work.
I learned Norman had to get the mail everyday that was miles from his home.
I learned that 25,000 people die everyday from starvation.  16,000 of them are kids.
I learned about Norman's life and that Sundays were church day,  Horses had to be ready.
I learned that when 1914, there were 1,600,000,000 people in the world, and by the year 2050, there will be 9,000,000,000 people.
I learned Norman Borlaug used to play hide and seek with his sisters in their cornfields.
I learned Norman was born in 1914.
I learned that Norman brought baseball to Mexico.
I learned that Norman Borlaug introduced wrestling to Minnesota high schools.
I learned that Norman Borlaug connected the Cresco High School wrestling coach to the U of M.
I learned that Norman Borlaug's ashes were spread among the many places he impacted people's lives.
I learned that you do NOT want to be the direct path to the ground when working with electricity.
I learned that you need to call Iowa One to check before digging underground for wires.
I learned that entomology is the study of bugs.
I learned that arthropods have exoskeletons.
I learned that crabs, shrimp and lobsters are a lot like insects.
I learned that energy can come from sugars in foods and used through your body to make something move.
I learned that it's ok to be selfish if you are trying to help others in the same plan.
I learned that Norman Borlaug is the Father of the Green Revolution.

I learned how to magically turn a monster-garbage cookie into fire.

I took so many pictures that there's not enough room for them in one spot. I'll share the pictures on Monday morning as we finish up writing our thank you letter and finished Wordle you created Friday before you left.  It turned out great!  You can see it above this post:)  I hope you liked how the colors turned out - the ones YOU chose:)

Whatever you ended up doing this weekend, whether it was the football game on Friday (I saw some of you!), the Harvest Fest events, staying at relatives or just hanging out at home.  It seems the weekends just fly by.

Heads-Up for the Week
Monday:  Meet for partner projects with Connecticut classmates, Band Meeting @6:30 p.m.
Tuesday:  Last MISIC test - Reading!  Can bring healthy snack
Wednesday:  3-hour out!

**Also, we'll chat about the yellow note that was in your boxes for a Book-It Kick Off on Tuesday, October 1!  Have your parents mark their calendars.  We'll invite them in from 2:40 - 3:10 to our classroom.  This should give them a little time to arrange schedules to maybe make it work:)

See you soon!

I'll now you checked the blog if you take out a thin colored marker from your cubbies and have it ready at your "home."  I'll go over the new job people (sorry Sawyer... your pledge is done...), and then tell you what to do with the marker!

Wacky Wednesday with All Sorts of Creativity!

5B!
This was an awesome day for sharing what creative juices are flowing in your minds when given many different choices to express it.  I saw dancing, skits, towers built from cups, foam people, heard music from the piano and so much more!

Here are pics to remember your exploration!  (Be sure to scroll down AFTER the pics, too, for more blog)

Don't forget our Connecticut classmates either!!  TEAM #1 ROCKED the World today knowing each other from both classes!  Wowser!  Don't worry, we'll get to know them better as we do more projects!  Yes, I'll bring the rewards from that contest on Thursday!

Be reminders for tomorrow....
MISIC - bring a healthy snack if you want
Gum Law - newly written stating we can chew gum in class under certain rules
Dress CREATIVELY to express yourself (Mrs. Branum will LOVE it!)
Extra Library Day since we won't have it on Friday due to the field trip

I'll know you checked the blog if you come in Thursday morning, grab your Read to Self book or Work on Writing notebook and do one of those with no other chatting.  Let's see who REALLY has it in them to be the STRONGEST 5B Models!!

TTFN,

A Little Late Tonight....Sorry...

This is a picture that represents how I felt about technology today....SPECIFICALLY during the MISIC TESTING!!!  Grrrrrrrrr.... Ahhhhh...

But this is how 5B dealt with it....
(well, except some of you are boys...so...picture another one with a boy, too!)

So, be sure to tell your parents that you get an extra hug or extra 5 minutes to stay up or even a cookie!  You guys ROCK!!

Great job with your patience and polite way of dealing with the interruptions and frustrations that come with doing our first MISIC tests on the iPads!

It was definitely fun to see how you stored up that creativity in you and let it pour out of you with the dress up clothes today.  It goes to show, you are never too old to play dress up and use your imagination (even though most of your skits turned out to be kinda violent??????)  Enjoy your pics!

Lots of creativity!!  We'll continue connecting with the world as we keep showing our creative side the next few days!  Also, we'll keep on finding out more about the BOY WHO CHANGED the WORLD.  Hmm??? Who could that be??  I'll know you checked the blog if you watch and listen to this song/rap made by kids to celebrate the amazing life and accomplishments of that BOY WHO CHANGED the WORLD!  Tell me what you think of it as you come in Wednesday morning!

Oh.. and we have our Global Classmates joining us tomorrow!  Do you remember ANY of their names??  Right when you come in Wednesday, find your recording page and start studying your 22 other classmates!  Contest is Wednesday on TodaysMeet:)

Sounds Like I Missed a FAB Day in 5B!!

Hey there, my little Babycakes!!

Mrs. Popkin wrote wonderful things about how helpful and respectful angels she worked with today!  I'm so glad to hear it!  I loved getting all of the emails today about how you liked the new apps, Animation Express and Stick Man - EPIC!  From the emails, EPIC was the group favorite, however a few of you liked Animation Express better.  Either way, I thought they were both awesome, and I could spend WAY too much time messing with them!  But hey, that's just proof I'm being CREATIVE, right?!!

Well, don't think you used up all of your creative juices on Monday!  I've got something planned for Tuesday to really test out how creative you will allow yourself to be:)  Tomorrow is also our first MISIC test (Language).  Remember, you can bring a healthy snack if you wish:)

It sounds like everything went well today, but some issues in math class with Mrs. Popkin with switching groups?  We can figure that out tomorrow though. I'm so glad to hear such great things about the day!

Here were 2 pictures from the day that showed definite scientists and thinkers at work:

It looks like we have a tie!  So which is better???  Disposable or cloth?

And this one!!  I was sooooo surprised to see such a change!!  When I stopped back after school with Isaiah, he was ready to play in it!! I kept him away though!  Team of Engineers - it looks great!

Isn't this great!?!!

Thanks for showing what AMAZING Cadets you are, 5B!  You made your "mama" proud!!  I hope you are proud of yourselves, too!  I'll know you checked the blog if you watch this youtube video (CLICK HERE) about what special holiday is September 17 (tomorrow) - and NO, it's not still Dot Day even though we'll be doing some activities to continue the celebration!  Listen to the video a couple of times to get the main verse in your head, ok?  We'll be doing more with it:)

S'up 5B,
Happy INTERNATIONAL DOT DAY!!  Hopefully you did something CREATIVE today!!!

I hope you had a relaxing and restful weekend. I know the ending to our day was not the best we've had. It makes me sad that we ended on such disappointing terms. I wish I was there on Monday to see the great turn around of behaviors. We just seem to keep forgetting the big colorful letters on the front of the room that say RESPECT and the other set of letters that say THINK.

It would be so amazing to get notes from our substitute teacher about how perfect 5B really can be and show it. I have seen you all show it, so let's see what we can do.

Here are some heads up for this week:
Monday:  Mrs. Sorenson is gone:(  Your chance to show a substitute how AMAZING 5B is!  Also, today is your FIRST GUIDANCE class with Mrs. McCabe:)  Yippee!
Tuesday:  We have a MISIC test and you can bring a healthy snack to have during that day, and we have a special ONLINE presentation to celebrate September 17!  What's so special about September 17??  You'll have to wait and see!
Wednesday:  Normal:)
Thursday:  We will celebrate DOT Day by wearing creative clothing. Express yourself through your clothes that day. We also have another MISIC test. You can also bring snacks again. We will have library today instead of Friday due to our Norman Borlaug field trip.
Friday: Norman Borlaug field trip. You will need a lunch, drink and an extra water. Watch the weather.

Things you will notice Monday morning:
1) New math journals - Mrs. Boderman will hand out paper journals as back ups when the iPads aren't working.
2) Same classroom jobs as last week - Keep them the same:) Don't forget to feed Firefish please:)
3)  New display on the white board – these are statements that you will be doing throughout the day. Check them out as you come in on Monday morning.
4)  New PILLOWS:)  I did some bargain shopping on Saturday and got new pillows to replace our old, loose-stuffing ones.  Please show respect to our classroom and my generosity by using them appropriately and PUTTING THEM BACK when you are done with them.

Finally - I'll know you checked the blog and are ready for a new fresh start to the week if you write down 1 AWESOME positive thing you'll do to help out 5B with making good choices.  Write your name on it and give it to Mrs. Boderman.  She'll have a little reward for you:)

Oh, last, but not least... Happy Birthday to Sawyer!!  (on Monday!)  Sawyer, if you bring treats, will you wait to hand them out on Tuesday when I'm back?  I have a special activity we do for birthdays.  That ok, buddy?

Be good little babies for your mama!  Excited to get emails from you:)

Peace Out,
Mrs. Sorenson

Duct Dynasty is Working in 5B Today!

Hey, 5B Babies!!  (Oh, how I miss your sweet angelic "mama, mama" voices!)

Sorry it's later tonight.  I haven't had an Internet connection since I got home until right now!!  :(

I can't wait to see how many tickets we earned in JUST ONE DAY!  Carter and Jasmine, I'm guessing the class will be very anxious for you to count the tickets at recess time on Friday:)  Hmmm.. You think we have 100 yet???  My guess is.... 134...  I promise I didn't count!

Some Shout-Outs about today's little angles...
*Absolutely PERFECT morning!  Couldn't have had a better example of Cadet Pride!!  WOW!
*Amazing ideas and some clever details about how to improve and reconstruct our fallen dome- you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see who gets "interviews" for the job.
*Math groups seem to be going excellent.  I'm hearing compliments about 5B students from Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Halverson.  Awesome!  And of course, the poor dears who are stuck with me.... you're being fabulous, too!

***BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: I totaled up the grains of rice students wrote on the board/sticky notes today from www.freerice.com and by the end of the day, our class donated.....

Wait for it....

Wait for it.....

22, 470 GRAINS OF RICE!!!!!
Divide that by 100 (for a bowl) = 224.7 bowls of rice!!!  Over 220 people will have a meal and hopefully keep them from starving... ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!!!  What an amazing impact...  I see it now... a new book coming out...  5B... The Class Who Changed the World!

Be sure to tell your families and friends about www.freerice.com.  Play like crazy and follow in the footsteps of Dr. Norman Borlaug!

I'll know you checked the blog if you play on www.freerice.com for around 5 minutes (or more if you like) and tell me how many grains of rice you earned!

Oh..AND...  it's Mrs. Wilson's BIRTHDAY tomorrow...Friday, the 13th!!! AHHHHHH...  We'll be doing a nice little dance for her to celebrate.  Get your dancing shoes and singing voices on!

I'm keeping the blog short and sweet.
I'm guessing you'll think that's pretty neat!

Tomorrow we'll make our geodesic dome,
Remember to roll your papers if you took them home:)

Don't forget that Wednesday is an early -out,
I'm guessing you're excited and would like to shout!

Mixed Up Monday Schedule...But Great Bubble Dealing:)

Wow, 5B!
With such a goofy, busy schedule, you'd think 5B would be struggling with the "bubbles" in the room! Not bad at ALL!  Now, the real test will be tomorrow when you are back into the swing of things and not so tired from the weekend!

I think back to how much you did today, and I'm kinda tired! Here's a list of all of the activities you worked on or learned about today:

*New app Educreations

WOWSER!!!  You see what I mean?  Busy little bees!  There are photos below to show the fun and learning!  Enjoy!  But, I'll know you checked the blog tonight....if.... you come in the room, and start rolling newspapers for our geodesic dome!  You make work alone or with a partner, as long as your newspaper rolls are STURDY!!!  We have about 20 or so done, so we have over 40 to still make.  The sooner the rolls are done, the sooner we can start construction:)

Well, 5B,
Do you think you are rested up for a 5 day week???  Hopefully, that's a YOU BETCHA, BABY!!  But don't forget, there is a 3-hour early out on Wednesday of this week, so we'll give you a teeny bit of a break.

I had a good weekend... shopping, school work, play with family, school work, watch some movies, school work, trip to Walmart, and hmmmm...what else???  Oh, yeah, school work:)  That's ok, though!  That just means I'm raring to go for a busy week of learning, laughing and thinking, right??

News or Heads-Up for This Week:
Monday:
1)  Will start switching classrooms for math groups!!  You'll get to see which teacher and other students will be in your group for this next unit!  (Sorry for those of you who are stuck with me...I'm sure you're sick of me by now:-)
2)  Connecticut Friends Competition on ooVoo or Skype!
3)  Another band day to learn about instruments (at least I think this is today???)

Wednesday:
3-hour early out - I'll miss you, my little babies!!

Thursday/Friday:  I think normal:)

I'll know you checked the blog tonight if you click on this link (RIGHT HERE!) and watch this AMAZING student and his creative thinking!  He is so talented and creative.  He uses pvc pipes (for plumbing) to make musical instruments and spatulas.  Listen to the songs and see if you can recognize any of them.  I'll know you checked the blog if you tell me what you thought of this video and this kid!
Have a great rest of your weekend, and I'll see you soon!

Oh, and if you do happen to have a few more newspapers around, bring them on in.  I'm not sure how many we will need for the project we're starting for science, ok?

We Did Fix IT!....(Mostly...)

Yippee for 5B!

Bob the Builder was out of town, but OBVIOUSLY you don't know need because you figured it all out on your own!  Congrats.. my little 5B Angels (ding! ahhhhhh)  Let's make Friday a "FANTASTIC FRIDAY"....not a Freaky Friday the way our Wacky Wednesday is!  OK?

Lots of great learning the last few days! Here are a few pics!

I'll keep it WAY short tonight since I have a few meetings.  I'll know you checked the blog if you come in Friday morning and simply start doing jumping jacks.  Keep doing them until I stop you, ok?  That should wake you up:)

Have great nights...and my goodness, tomorrow is already FRIDAY?!!  Wow, the week really flew!  Oh, and PLEASE be sure that you thank your families for all of the snack donations!  They've been helping us get through the mornings:)

Fo shizzle....my nizzle..  Peace Out!
