BLUE OUT BULLY PREVENTION DAY, MONDAY, OCT. 1ST!

Hey, 5B,
I hope everyone had a great weekend with AMAZING weather!! I spent Saturday at Pinter's with Jason and Isaiah and had a blast!  Isaiah was pooped by the end of his visit there!  I was too after pedaling those big kid bikes!  Wouldn't THAT be an awesome trip to take as a class?  See what you can do to talk our principal into that, will ya? :)

I sure hope you chatted with your families about how things went on Thursday and Friday of last week.  I actually enjoyed seeing you guys all day long, but I think many of you missed being able to switch classes like typical 5th graders.  I don't blame you.  The teachers chatted at the end of the day on Friday and decided to give 5th grade another chance to prove themselves.  However, Mr. Sickles and Mrs. Sovereign have supported our class decision to remove any students who can not show Cadet Pride in any of these following ways:
*Not following teacher directions
*Not listening when it is instructional time
*Not getting homework done (remember, you have math, social studies AND the Class Dojo sheet to return for Monday)
*Disrupting other students' learning in any way

I'm guessing we'll have a MUSCLE Monday!  That' s kind of our "thing", isn't it? Also, don't forget to WEAR BLUE ON MONDAY!!!!!  We will try to prove as a school we will NOT let anyone be bullied at Crestwood Elementary, Junior HIgh or High School.  We'll be doing all sorts of activities throughout the day in literacy, math, science and social studies to think about how bullying can affect anyone, anywhere, any age, any time, anyhow!  So, get ready to STOMP OUT BULLYING!!!

A couple of reminders/Heads Up about the Week...
Monday:  Homework due - Math pg 34 - all, Social Studies 50 states map, Class Dojo sheet, Some Band Lessons
Tuesday:  Guest Speaker coming!
Wednesday - ???
Thursday - ???
Friday - ChipShoppe Fundraiser Kick-OFF!!  Putting money in our school's piggy bank for field trips!  Yippee!

I'll know you checked the blog if you make up a rhyme to help prevent bullying.
Here's my example:
When bullying ends...
We have more friends:)

Full Moon Coming....Sunday, I Believe...

5B,
Have you ever heard that things get a little crazy, chaotic or wild around full moons?  Well, as teachers, we have been tracking this "theory."  We are finding it to be quite true.  I have to thank 5B today for their patience, self-control and hard-working attitudes when we had several interruptions due to misbehaviors.  I am sooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo proud of you who show your Cadet Pride each and every day of class.  You are true role models for your classmates!  Keep it going!! I'm sending you a BIG HUG through my computer to you!!!

Today was quite tough to stay on task with all of the visits from Mr. Sickles pulling students out for reminders, with me being out in the hallway discussing behaviors, and some of the disruptions from your classmates in our room.  So, please know that I am thankful for such fantastic examples of Cadet Pride that can lead our school for the class of 2020!  You Rock!

Due to the many inappropriate behaviors the 5th grade teachers witnessed today, we feel that switching classes is too overwhelming for some of the students.  Tomorrow will be a very different day for all of 5th grade.  You'll have to wait and see what that means, OK??  I bet you are REALLY curious, aren't you?!  Sorry, gonna have to wait!

Upcoming Events/Reminders
1.  Make sure to show your parents the BLUE SHIRT day note to stop bullying for Monday, Oct. 1st.  We have some other things coming up, too, but I have to wait to make sure they all are organized and ready to go before I share them with you.
2.  I forgot to give everyone their passwords for the Class Dojo today!  Sorry.  Please talk to your family about this.  I'll be sending home a note tomorrow, having your family sign that they know your account's username and password and will check it once a week.
3.  MISIC testing is coming up in 2 weeks for 5th grade.  I just wanted to let you and your families know that in case you have dentist or doctor appointments coming up.

Once again, I need 5B to know what fantastic students we have in our class.  You are the reason I want to come to school each day.  Remember, we are a 5B Family....  We need to stick together.  Thanks for all your fun personalities, interest in learning and most important of all...... respect:)

I'll know you checked the blog if you count up how many "o's" are in the word, "so" in the first paragraph of the blog!  Count carefully.  Write it down and share it with me in the morning.

A little Late Tonight..Sorry...

I hope you all had a great afternoon and evening.  Some of you were going bowling, some were practicing your new band instruments, some were cutting wood, 1 was heading to Rochester and others didn't know, but I'm pretty sure they were glad to have some extra time off from school!

I had a good meeting this afternoon while you were gone.  Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have been hanging out with you guys, but the teachers got a lot of topics discussed, made some great plans for some upcoming events - specifically events happening NEXT WEEK....for YOU!!

Notes will be coming home either tomorrow of Friday of some special events next week, so keep your eyes posted for those, ok?

I know you all had things you were going to do today, but I do know that almost everyone had math homework to complete, Journal page 32 - show your work using decimals and lining them up.  We'll be correcting them in the morning.  Anyone who didn't have enough time ALL AFTERNOON and EVENING gets to spend some special time with me during....hmmmm....oh, I know when I'm free....RECESS:)  So, choose when you'd like to complete your work wisely:)

I'll know you checked the blog tonight if you get other blog checkers together out on the playground in the morning (don't tell anyone who didn't check the blog though, ok?) and be prepared the song "The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round".  I'll explain why on Thursday morning why I chose this...  If you're brave enough to prove you checked the blog by doing this, I'll give you a little extra reward:)

Get your work done, show Cadet Pride...and get some sleep.  See you soon.

Not Too Bad of a Tuesday...

But.... Mondays are still SOOOOOO much better:)  So, that can just be our goal for the first quarter...  Make every day a day FILLED with Cadet Pride!  We have such amazing moments in class....and then.... well, I'm not sure what happens???  So... we'll just keep at it!

My meeting after school about the World Record for People Dressed as Pilgrims went well.  We found out that we are just at the very beginning stages of it and need to go through some guidelines first.  One thing I do know now is that we wouldn't be doing the actual gathering until January.  Apparently there is A LOT to know, do, plan for, advertise, organize, etc. before doing such an event!  See, teachers learn everyday, too!

I hope group band went well for my little instrument players!  We missed you while you were gone.  We even cleaned up the room perfectly for tomorrow.  So, thank the non-band people for the help when you see them.  Great job, guys (and 1 girl:)

Remind your families about the early out tomorrow.  Also, we have practice for bus evacuation RIGHT away in the morning, so come in quickly so we can get to that.  Last year's 5B class beat a record for how fast high schoolers got on and off the busses.  I wonder if this year's 5B can do it???  We'll see!

Also, tomorrow is library, so remember any books/movies if you have them at home.

Lastly, I'll know you checked the blog if you click on this link to see an example of AMAZING students who work hard (like you), work together (like you most of the time) and are determine to be the best at what they do (like some of our 5B students all of the time, and some of our 5B students some of time).  Click on ME!  I think you'll be astonished by these students who are the same age as YOU!  Write down ONE word that you think after watching it!

Great Improvement from Friday!

Woo-HOO!!!
5B rocked the school this morning when they came in today!!!!!
SOOOOOOOOOOO proud of you!!!!!!!  Now, let's see if TUESDAY is going to be the same???  Our history tells us that Tuesdays have been quite challenging... Let's change history, shall we??

Hope the band people have fun tonight getting their books and maybe instruments.  Bring all books and instrument pieces that you have for Tuesday, since some will have individual lessons and group band. :)  Yeah!!

I'll keep it short tonight.  I'll know you checked the blog if you write down how you felt about the Iowa Game on Saturday:  HAPPY, SAD, Don't CARE....

Peace Out,
Mrs. Sorenson

So Sorry It's Late...

Hey, there 5B Kiddos...
I'm sorry this post is so late.  I just got home from being gone all weekend.  I couldn't get on the 5B Blog until now:(

I'll keep it way short in case any of you are still up checking it!

If you are in Band, remember the meeting tomorrow night at 6:30 with your parents.  There are no 5B students who have lessons on Mondays.  So, don't worry about needing to be ready until Tuesday, ok?

I'll know you check the blog this weekend (and late on a Sunday night) if you predict where your NEW SPOT is going to be when we change desks this week!  Either write it down or just tell me as you come in on Monday.  Can you believe we've been in school 1 MONTH already??  Crazy!

Ok.. get to bed!  (Or, if you're reading this in the morning...Good Morning...see you very soon!)

Wednesday and Thursday... YIPPEE!!!

Wow,
5B sure turned it around on Wednesday and Today!  The bubbles activity on Wednesday really seem to be a helpful way to realize and remember that just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD do something, right?!  Be sure to thank your families for the suggestions!  I'm afraid the duct tape one might not be allowed though!  (even though it was an enjoyable idea:)

I heard super things about 5B in science!!!!! Mrs. Halverson bragged about how well you worked today, and Mrs. Wilson said what a great job of working during "choice time" in her room.  WOWSER!!!!  That's what I call improvement!  Right on!  Keep it up!  We'll have to count up our yellow/green tickets tomrrow

A couple things to remember for tomorrow...
*3-hour early out
*Cadet clothing day
*Can buy tattoos for $1
*Pep Rally at 9:50 at the football field
*KNOW YOUR SCHOOL SONG!!!!!!!!
*If you don't have your band note in....bye, bye to recess until it is:(
*Another chance to show what you're made of when we have fun and goofy activities!

Someone asked about face painting.  We decided NO to face painting, but the black lines under your eyes is ok.  Also, your hair is fair game.  Do what you please with it:)  Can't wait to see you SHINE with CADET PRIDE.  Just LOVE your school spirit this week.

I'll know you checked the blog if you do this task for me...
Draw a stickman/woman figure of yourself doing something strange!  Have fun with this!  I'll be showing a fun website in the morning.  Write your name on the paper with your stickman.

What Happened Today?

Well, our Tough Tuesday returned.  I'm not sure what it is about Tuesdays, but we definitely need to figure something out.  Today's chatting and blurting and lack of self-control were a true disappointment. Please ask your parents and family members if they have some suggestions for us on how to improve in these areas.  This will be your proof for checking the blog.  Have your parents or you write down ideas on what 5B can do to limit our chatting, help us get on task quicker or work on self-control.  OK?  Hand them to me as you come in Wednesday morning.

We'll chat more Wednesday about this, but I would like us to learn from our mistakes instead of dwell on them.  So, let's shake off a tough day and move forward to show what 5B is really capable of.  I've seen some Rock Stars, Angels and Models this year.... please let me see them again.  I really like those kids!!!!  I missed them today (ok, not all of them, some were there today... they just maybe needed to help lead the class a bit more:)

I'd love to have some fun with Roll Out of Bed Day on Wednesday, but we'll need to remember to have fun AND keep learning.  So be creative with your pj's or hair or whatever it is you'll be wearing, but just make sure you can focus on learning while wearing it.

You have library tomorrow, so if you have books at home, bring them in.  I know a few of you are looking forward to check out some new books since we have some voracious readers (numnumnumnum).

Have a good chat with your parents about today.  Bring in some helpful ideas and let's make sure tomorrow is a WOW Wednesday like we've had and not a repeat of how we ended today:(  Sad and NOT the 5B I have come to call my babies.  .

Stay cool,
~Mrs. Sorenson

Muscle Monday!

A few of us thought that might be a fun name for Mondays!  We have a great arm motion for it ready to go.  Maybe we'll use it for another reason, too!

Great job showing Cadet Pride and school spirit today with all of the teams and jerseys I saw today.  I can't wait to see what creative ideas you have for "Crazy Sock Day" on Tuesday.  Remember, even if you don't have any silly socks, just do something different with normal socks (like borrow mom's or dad's, wear your brother's or sister's, wear one short/one long, wear UNmatching socks.  Whatever you do, have some fun with it and show that you care about our school's celebration!  I'd love to take a class silly sock photo!

Tomorrow will be a bit different schedule because we do NOT have any group band meetings.  We'll be having some longer classes in the afternoon though.  We'll get some time to work on or finish up our Prezis in social studies.  I'm excited about seeing more of the Prezis done!  They look soooo good!  But remember, if you are NOT done with the typing or videos yet, I'm OFFERING you to come in Tuesday morning to do some work on them - even though you could be doing it at home if you have  Internet:-)

Check out the Wordle we did this morning on the side of the blog.  It turned out super.  If you click on it, you'll see it larger and can even print it yourself if you like it.

I know today was a long day because you didn't get outside for recess, but tomorrow may feel long too since you have no specials classes.  So get your wiggles and jiggles out of you tonight and tomorrow morning BEFORE coming in the school, ok?

Also, let's try to stay healthy.  We have many coughs and sneezes coming from our room, so be sure to wash/sanitize hands often and think about coughing/sneezing into our arm/elbows instead of our hands.  We want Memphis feeling better, and we don't need anyone else with that poor girl's cold!

Have a good night, funky monkeys!
See you on the flip side!

It's Been a LONG TIME...

Wow, 5B!
This is the longest we've gone between posts so far this year!  I tried posting last Thursday night but for some reason the website would not publish my comments to you.  Oh, well, we survived, right?!

I had a great time on Friday with 5B.  I was impressed with all of the information we learned from the presenters.  The list of facts we learned was long and amazing to reread.  I'm trying to get it to print in a Wordle for us, but I'm still not having luck.  I'll keep at it though.  I saw quite a few 5th graders at the Harvest Fest events (bouncy houses and parade) this weekend.  Isaiah got WAY too much candy from the parade. How about you guys?  I'll have photos to share with you from Friday on the Smartboard as you come in on Monday, so we can review our weekends and last Friday's field trip with photos:)

We have another fun week this week with homecoming events - dress up days, a pep rally on Friday morning and the parade Friday afternoon (I believe we get out of school early on Friday, too.)  Don't forget to show your school spirit each day this week to help celebrate Cadet Pride with the dress up days.  We've been challenged to learn the Crestwood Fight Song before Friday's Pep Rally!  Can we DO IT???  YES, WE CAN!!!!!

Monday:  Favorite Sport/Team Jersey
Tuesday: Crazy Sock
Wednesday:  Roll Out of Bed
Thursday:  Dress Like Teacher/Teacher Dress Like Students
Friday:  Cadet Pride - Blue, Black, White, Cadet-wear

I'm headed over to the high school to have an omelet breakfast, so I'd better get going!  Enjoy the rest of your weekend with the great weather, too.  I'll know checked the blog this weekend if you click on and view this link Crestwood Fight Song. Watch it and practice it over and over to help be a 5B Leader!

Peace Out, Homeys!

WOW Wednesday Again!

Ok, Sorry 5B,
It'll be a short one tonight.  Pretty busy at my house, so I just wanted to say "Great Job" with Cadet Pride today!  Way to go with the 384 tickets 5th grade has already earned toward the goal of 1,000!  We are well on our way!

Hope you had fun on your extra hours of freedom.  The teachers did some cool things too that will hopefully affect you later this year....we'll find out more about that in October!

I'll know you checked the blog if watch an AWESOME video on the side of the blog.  Click on the link that is titled "Beatboxing to Dynamite".  Watch it and we'll chat about it more on Thursday morning.  Make 1 of the sounds for me as you come in Thursday - that's how I'll know you watched it, ok?

Here are some examples of some 5B SUPER MODELS!  Keep up the great work, 5B!

A Bit of a Rollercoaster Today...

Greetings, 5B Models (strike a pose!),
I'm feeling pretty exhausted after today...  It seems we had a exciting but goofy start to our day with meeting Carl and then having math in the morning.  That seemed to start our day off kinda differently.  It seemed to have its ups and downs after that.  I saw some great Cadet Pride in line behavior, bathroom breaks and I heard that band time went well with Mrs. Jones at the end of the day.  Yippee!!

However.. the chatting seemed to be a bit more today.  Beating yesterday's MODEL DAY will be a pretty tough challenge, but I'm DARING you to BRING it ON!  I'd love to see you beat yesterday's behaviors!  Prove me wrong, my little darlings!  Also... our room is starting to become a wee bit messy due to careless actions.  I'd like us to work on that more so our room can be a neat and tidy home away from home, ok?

Remind your families about the 3-hour early out tomorrow.  Also, if you weren't liking the hot lunch option, remember there is no salad bar option. (Don't want anyone going hungry!) Oh, and you have library tomorrow, too.

Also, remember the Homecoming T-shirt orders are due by tomorrow.  I'll collect them in the morning and send them up right away.

Tomorrow will be a goofy schedule because of the early out... I won't get to see you much AT ALL!  That makes me SO SAD:(  I'll have the schedule on the white board in the morning, so be sure to check that out right away.  You'll start with math, then go to library, then science and FINALLY I get to see you for writing/social studies!  It will definitely be a whirlwind of learning tomorrow.

I'll know you checked the blog if you check out the website on the side of the blog that says "What's Wrong with this Photo?"  It's way down on the list.  You really have to STARE CLOSELY at your computer/laptop/etc. to see what's wrong with the photo.  I bet you can't find it!  Write down ONE word that you FEEL when you find what's wrong with the photo.  I am REALLY excited to see your responses!!!!!  Give it to me as you come in on Wednesday morning:)

5B Model Monday!!

(I had another photo in mind to share on the blog tonight, but I forgot my camera at school.  I wonder which 3 boys from class would be in that picture??? How about tomorrow's blog?)

Such an AMAZING DAY, 5B!!!!!  Can't believe such a great start to the week!  Let's show our new classmate, Carl, what a perfect class of 5B angels (ding, ahhhh) he will be joining!  Can't wait to show off 5B to him!

Reminders:
Book Orders due tomorrow:)
Pictures and Order Forms due tomorrow:)
Group Band tomorrow:)
September 11th - remembering an important day in history (tomorrow)

Be sure to watch/listen to the Norman Borlaug Rap again.  It's below the 5B Library Checkout.  Be ready for Friday's field trip and chance to show your stuff!

Also, I added a Math Game - Factor Captor (just like the one you've played in math with Mrs. Wilson) to the side of the blog as well.  Review that game because you'll be playing that in the morning for a few minutes before we switch to writing class, ok?

I'll know you checked the blog if you memorize 1 of the lines from the Norman Borlaug Rap (the Chorus part).  Any of the 8 lines will count!  I'll have an extra reward if you "sing" the line instead of just saying it:)  Have a great night.

Where Did the Weekend Go?

Goodness, 5B,
I can't believe it's Sunday already??  I feel like I blinked, and the weekend is over!  I am always sad about weekends flying by, but I do look forward to see my little 5B Angels (ding, ahhhhh) on Monday.  I was lucky enough to see several 5th graders this weekend though (Rachel, Ellana, Casey, and Hailey!)  Poor kids...can't get away from me, can you?

I was so excited to see we have some new followers on the 5B Blog!  Yeh!  Thanks for joining us!

We have a kind of a busy week this week.  Look at the list of events and remind your families about them please:
Monday:  Uh.. well, nothing new...just tired students after the weekend.  There may be a birthday to celebrate...need to check for sure though.
Tuesday:  Picture Day and Book Orders Due and Band Practice for all
Wednesday:  3-Hour Early Out
Thursday: Hmmm... normal, I think?
Friday:  Norman Borlaug Field Trip, need lunch, drink, plastic water bottle, layered clothes

Firefish seems to be doing quite well.  I stopped in both Saturday and Sunday to feed him and check on him.  I'm thinking a plastic plant or little fish bowl object might be nice to add to his home.  If you have anything like that at home that your families no longer are using, you can see if it works for Firefish, ok?

I know it was a big sports weekend based on what many of you were telling me about your weekend plans:  Cadet game, UNI game, Iowa vs. IA State and Bears!

BIGGEST NEWS:  Our schedule will change a bit each morning this week and for the rest of the year.  Because we have such short classes for switching in the afternoons, I'll be giving you some time to work on Math from Mrs. Wilson when you come in each morning.  So, I'll know you checked the blog if you come in right away like the little angels you are:)  and get out your math journals at your spots.  OK?

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday...  Get some rest...it'll be a busy but fun week!

Hasta Luego!

Sad News....

5B,
I'm so glad you all were able to say goodbye to Twitter today before you left.  I went to pick up Isaiah from daycare and bring him back to help put Twitter in a traveling bowl to come to my house and....
when I brought Isaiah in the classroom to show him both Twitter and his adopted brother, (no name fish), we noticed Twitter was.... no longer..... with us....

He must have been holding on long enough to say his farewells to you...  He was a good fish.  We did what we could to make things work for hm...but apparently, it wasn't meant to be.

It's sad to lose a part of a family, so please think about how others may feel even if you weren't all that attached to Twitter, ok?  Be respectful and caring to those who may need some tender words tomorrow.  Remember, Twitter was a part of 5B, so we want to be thoughtful to any living thing.

I'll know you checked the blog if you put together the color-coded letters in the blog.  They spell 2 words.  Write them down on a piece of paper, and show it to me as you come in on Friday morning.

Short One Tonight...

Hey, 5B,

This post will be short and sweet
Cuz' Mrs. So is going out to eat!

Pizza I'll have and cactus bread, too!
Would you like me to share some with you?

To show you checked the blog this time,
Write me a poem of at least 2 lines!

Write it down, at the top put your name,
and don't worry if your rhymes are kinda lame.

Have fun and express your feelings inside,
show off that amazing spirit and Cadet Pride!

Later
Gators!

Good Start After a 3 Day Weekend!

Hey, there, my little 5B Angels (ding...ahhhhhh)!
I know today was difficult to get back into the swing of things after a nice long weekend, but you guys did superb!  (I used a word from that book I read to show to "Tune into Interesting Words and Use Them!")  Oh, also, let your families know that you're FAMOUS in our school district with the video I put together from Back to School Night!  If you want to see it again (or show your family), click on this link to view it.

I know it also felt long because you didn't get recess until 2:40 today, so thanks for your patience and good attitudes.  Tomorrow will be back to normal - Library in the morning and a regular recess time. Hopefully it will not be so HOT!!!  Let's all remember our deodorant, right?!  I could've used some extra today, too!

Please make sure you get your picture packets home with you tonight.  You can bring them in any day up until Tuesday, Sept, 11 - PICTURE DAY!

I'll know you checked the blog if you check out an AMAZING video of a student who was SOOO CREATIVE for a school project.  It's down the right side of the blog called PVC Pipes Music.  We'll watch it again as a class in the morning.  I can't wait to see your reactions to this crazy invention this student made!

Have a stupendous night (Oh, there's another word from that book - Boy, I am so sophisticated, haaa)
Smell ya later,
Mrs. Sorenson

Are You Rested Up, 5B?

Well, my 5B Rock Stars!
Did you have a great 3 day vacation?  Did you stay up late?  Eat fun snacks?  See family and/or friends?  Did you run around and get sweaty?  (Remember, shower before I see you Tuesday morning though, heeheee).

I hope you all had a nice weekend.  I know I did.  I enjoy lots of family time, saw friends and got some work done around the house.  I realize that doesn't sound fun to kids, but most adults feel pretty happy when housework gets done!

I'm excited to hear about something you did this weekend.  I also put together a short video of you all from the Back to School Night videos I took.  I can't wait to share it with you!

Ok.. Last week, we gave Tuesday a new name... (Tough Tuesday).  Let's have a Do-Over, shall we?  Let's come up with a new, improved feeling about Tuesdays.  Maybe something like Terrific Tuesdays?  Top-Notch Tuesdays?  Trustworthy Tuesdays?  Oh, I like that one, too!

Also remember, Tuesdays are our "Learning about Band days," so you'll be meeting with Mrs. Jones again.  However, this time, 5B will visit her after lunch and have their recess at the end of the day. Remember how 5A and 1/2 of 5C had to do that last week?  Just wanted to remind you:)

"So, am I in the video you made?"
I'll know you checked the blog if you whisper in my ear (before coming in the room) on Tuesday morning, "So, am I in the video you made?"

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday...hopefully you didn't get drenched with that rain after lunch!
Take care my little munchkins!  (ooh, that's a new one!)
