Ugh... Get Ready for Snow to Return....

Be sure you're prepared for boots, snowpants and outdoor clothing again :(  With the forecast, it looks like our area will be getting a fresh coat of snow on the ground.  No... not so much we will miss school!  However, it's enough to make it messy, cold and wet when you're outside for recess!  Be smart:)

I hope the last few minutes went smoothly and you showed the other adults in the room how 5B is full of Cadet Pride!

I tallied up your votes for our Spirit Awards for Monday's dressing up with very BRIGHT or lots of colors to celebrate My Many Colored Days!  These people were mentioned several times!

Congrats to...
Ben!
Haley!
Britain!
Joey!
Camden!
Kelly!

Dress Up Tomorrow

I'll keep it simple tonight!  Blog proof is to bring back your PARENT SURVEY about Conferences! The input I get back from your families is especially important to me!  Thanks!  I'll be appreciative by awarding YOU and the whole class IF we can get back 24 of our 28 classmates who have had their conferences last week!  Help remind each other!!

Talk about GORGEOUS WEATHER!?!

This weekend's weather gave me the glimpse I needed for warmer days and sunny times!  I hope everyone had a chance to do SOMETHING outside!  It was fabulous!  We were in the Twin Cities this weekend, but it was so great to not have to bundle up with a coat, hats, mittens, etc!  We took Isaiah to a hotel/waterpark and to Disney on Ice!  It was super show!  I think I enjoyed it more than anyone else in my family!  That's how we spent most of our weekend!  I'm headed to the Dad's Belgian Waffle Breakfast this morning (Sunday).  My stomach is getting rumbly just writing about it!

I'd LOVE to know what your weekend plans were!  Add them to the TodaysMeet Link below to share about your weekend!  You can share your favorite part, all of it, or what wasn't so great about it!  We are a family, so we like to know the good, the bad and the ugly:)

This week will be OUR FIRST FULL WEEK of SCHOOL since DECEMBER!  That is just unbelievable!  We have a busy week ahead, too!

We have Dr. Seuss's birthday to celebrate with dress up days.  I believe we will meet with our Kindergarten buddies again!  Then, we have D.A.R.E. again in writing class!  Busy, busy, busy!

Let's see if we can show how important it is to honor a great author who inspires READING!
Who will show the brightest and most colors?

Adding to the TodaysMeet link above will be your blog proof!  Everybody did an EXCELLENT job at their conferences last week!  I have one little job left for you to do and for your parents, too!  I'll explain that on Monday!  Get rested up.... 5 DAYS of LEARNING???  I sure hope you can handle it!

Doubled Our Fun Passes From Yesterday!

That's super that we were able to double the amount of Fun Passes!  Our "promises" to each other and the class must have given us a little incentive!  Awesome!  So, 6 were earned today, and 3 are locked in.  Kelsey, we need you to do a count for us so we know where we're at!  Isn't our goal 50 Fun Passes?  So, that should be a reachable goal us!

The only homework I noticed was for social studies to complete the 3 Regions of Colonies page.  Please be sure you are being responsible and doing your 100% best to complete work!

Conferences are tomorrow for the other 1/2 of our 5B Family!  The first night when wonderfully, and those who practiced today, I'm so impressed with your mature and professional attitudes to lead the conference!  Awesome effort! Remind your families that there is free babysitting offered for your younger siblings in the Discovery Center during conferences.

Also, remember there is a 1-hour early out and NO SCHOOL on FRIDAY!

Blog Proof!  I was reading a funny article about strange things you can do with your body!  Read this short article and try out 1, 2 or even 3 of the suggestions listed.  I tried all 3 and found it was funny to learn what your body is NOT able to do!  Weird!  When you come in Thursday morning, tell me which one you either liked the most, surprised you the most or just thought was weird!

Click here for the short article and the 3 ideas to try!  They are quick and easy!

Have a great night!  See you tomorrow for your last day of the week!

OH, and we WILL have switches in the morning, so please get our all of your materials as usual!  I'd LOVE to read from Skeleton Man before switching!  Our next chapter is "The Knock at the Door."  Yikes!  I'd keep my door locked if I were Molly from the story!!

We Were BEAN-BOOZLED Today!

Wowza!  Thanks to Spencer our class got to experience the disgusting flavors of vomit, moldy cheese, grass clippings, skunk spray and others!  Dear, dear, ME!  Kyle was our photographer as we each took our "volunteered" turn in tasting these unknown Jelly Belly jelly beans!  Hats off to Kyle for the awesome photos.  Hats off to the volunteers who were WILLING to do this.  Finally hats off to Spencer for supplying the class with the entertainment!  Check out the faces below!  You TRULY had to be there to realize how funny and terrible it was at the same time!  I think Brian's mouth will forever smell like a skunk!  Ugh!!!

Our day started off QUITE well with switches and some great sharing from classmates!  We saw Alex play his harmonica, and Aidan L. shared his Mod Podge book covers from home.  Really fun to hear about past weekends, upcoming plans, birthday parties, etc.  I love finding out more and more to help our family understand each other!
However... our crazy BEAN-BOOZLE activity made for a tough transition in the hallway and recess. There were 6-7 Fun Passes removed from our container throughout the day.  I think that's the most we've had taken out....EVER.   Yet, I know we definitely had several put in.  So, realize that 1 little domino can have a MIGHTY impact when it's heading in the wrong direction.  We ended up with 3 in the container, meaning 1 1/2 were locked in.  That's better than nothing, but we are capable of SO SO much more!

Blog Proof... Let's get back in our "TEAM" centered mode, where we ALL are thinking of others and working toward our common goal.  IN THE MORNING, WHEN YOU COME IN OUR CLASSROOM... (do NOT do this tonight or before we come in on Wednesday morning), please write down 1-2 things you'll promise the class you'll do better on Wednesday to show you are thinking of our class as a TEAM, not just you alone.  IF you post it TONIGHT or BEFORE tomorrow's class, I'll know:)  It will have your time!  So, be sure you wait until you come in.  Be sure you put your FIRST name in the NickName section.  After you do this, then get our your switching materials!

TodaysMeet Blog Proof - To be posted ONLY in class tomorrow...True TEAM players think of others!

Monday, February 22, 2016

Um... You may need to help wind me up on Tuesday?

Conferences are absolutely fabulous and necessary!  However, they make for a long day and night!  So, your blog proof will be, as you come in on Tuesday morning, to come up behind me and give me a few pretend "crank crank" sounds and motions to make sure I'm wound up for a strong start to the day!

Then get your materials ready for switches right away.  It will be a NORMAL day (whatever that means - ha!).  Work on your Comic Strip for Tech Class if it is NOT done or your D.A.R.E. homework Lesson 2/3 if not done.

Finally, we'll get the day started!  By this time, 1/2 of the class will be able to just relax and know that you made it through leading your conferences!  The other 1/2... your time is coming soon!

Nighty Night!

Conference WEEK!

This should NOT be the first, 2nd or even 5th time you've seen or heard this, but you have....
coming up on Monday and Thursday of this week! Remember, that even though your time is "scheduled" for a particular slot (Ex: 3:10), you are welcome to come at any time in the 3:00 - 4:00 range.  This will allow flexibility for other siblings' conferences if needed.  Also, your conference may go over the typical 20 minutes, so keep in mind how much you need to share!

We have a VERY full schedule on Monday, so our room will be a-buzzing with a lot of sharing!

Remember ALSO we have a 1-hour early dismissal on Monday AND Thursday, with no school on Friday.  Hmmm...When will our FIRST full week of school be since the end of Christmas break?  Who knows?!  That's crazy!

***ANNOUNCEMENT*** Be sure families see this if you have younger brothers or sisters!
This was also sent home as a paper copy in student mailboxes on Friday.

Some HEADS UP for 5B...
1)  Monday will be a Mixed Up Monday Schedule, so there will NOT be switching in the morning, but you WILL have work from each of your teachers to complete.

2)  Book Orders - Many of you mentioned you wanted to order books but had to wait until Monday... I think Joey, Chase, and about 3 -4 more of you had asked to wait until Monday.  So, please be sure you have that in so I can get in those orders:)

Finally... It's going to be another busy week, and Mondays always start off pretty slow, so use this message below to prepare yourself for an AWESOME start to the week!  This will be your BLOG PROOF!  Start at the door entrance, and say out loud the words on the sign below!  I'll be watching and listening for those 3 important words to start us off right!

So AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!!

What a jam-packed, fun-filled, crazy-wild day at school with 5B!!  Wowsa!!!!!  Everything, everything, everything went so perfect that it is SCARY!!!

There are SO MANY AWESOME photos that I can't decide which ones to share!  I'll put them ALL on Facebook for sure.  But here a just a FEW from our fabulous day!!

Ready or Not, Here They Come!!
Crash, Bang, Boom!
Weeeeeeeeeeeee....
Mentoring Work with Kindergarten Buddies!
Great Job Mentoring, 5B!

We will share ALL of the photos and videos tomorrow!  Such a fun and busy day!  I didn't get many photos of you and your Luther partners or of the wrestlers send off this morning!  Oops!

I want to say some special thanks to Sawyer's mom, Ashton's mom, Vince's mom, and Ayden E.'s mom for helping us out with sleds and supervision today!  Also, thanks to all you kiddos who were willing to lug your own sleds to school and back!

Also, there were 3 helpful young ladies who stayed after school today to make sure our room was neat and tidy!  I didn't even ask!  5B is really embracing the R.A.K. week plan!  Our R.A.K. wall is filling up very quickly!  If you haven't had a chance to share one, please do!  I know every 5B family member has a huge heart!

Blog Proof...  We are switching like normal tomorrow morning, but we DO have a special author coming to visit, so think about how we can show off a great 1st impression!  The proof is knowing that we are going to the Cadet Store tomorrow at 12:45 (between lunch and recess).  Whisper to me what time we are going to the store.  Then start counting your Cadet bucks right away so you know how much you have!

Thanks for a truly memorable day!  I can't imagine I will EVER be able to forget day I had with my 2015-16 5B Family!  (we are family...)

BUSY DAY AHEAD on THURSDAY!

BIG PREPARED for tomorrow!

SLEDDING!
Yep, that will be ME most likely tomorrow!  We will eat lunch EARLY at 11:40 and get walking to East Park as soon as we are done eating!  We will head home around 1:10ish.

LUTHER PARTNERS!!

We will continue our Appear.in chats and Plot Diagram for your joint-story.  Yippee!

Kindergarten Mentoring!!!

Yep!  Our buddies are waiting for us to help them with reading and math!  Find your 5B "inner child" so you can connect with the little buddy tomorrow!  Mrs. Galvin told me to switch around partners so the kids don't get used to only 1 person, so you will find out your new buddy to mentor tomorrow RIGHT AWAY!  That's the blog proof!  When you come in, ask me for your NEW BUDDY!

Yikes, Sorry, Late... Out of the Habit!

Oops, 5B!  Sorry!  The 3 day weekend got me all out of whack!!  Gosh, I'm sorry it's so late!

Here are reminders..
CONFERENCE SIGN UPS...  There are still about 9 of your families that have NOT signed up.  You're doing a LOT of work for this conference, so be sure to remind your families how much effort you're putting into this! OK?  The online link closes at NOON on Wednesday, but calling the school still works.  563-547-2340

CONFERENCES PAPERS... That's your job, Kiddos! If you've lost the paper, how can you be responsible to fix the situation?  There are a lot of options!

SLEDDING... THURSDAY, February 18th!  It's a GO!  The weather looks PERFECT!  For any parents who are either dropping off sleds or helping out, the approximate time is 12:10ish or so until about 1:15.  We needed to move it up for all our other Thursday activities!   I'll put it on Facebook, too!

BLOG PROOF...  What is RAK Week?  Click on this link to find out.  Skim through the page and be able to tell us what the R. A. and K. stands for!  Be ready to share some brainstorm ideas we could do for special week!

Again... Sorry it's late!

Long Weekend.... Hard-Working 4 Days Ahead!

Happy Presidents' Day, 5B!

I hope everyone had a SUPER Valentine's Day and an extra day off!  I have some photos from our special activities on Friday that I CAN'T WAIT TO SHARE with you on Tuesday!  The "Honey, if you love me, will you please, please smile?" game was such a HOOT!  There are too many photos to post on the blog, but if your parents have Facebook, be sure they check out the 5B at Crestwood Elementary Page for the fun photos and memories!  We'll share them on Tuesday!  Also, I didn't share my birthday treats with you Friday because of the TONS of candy you exchanged for Valentine's Day!  I'll do that on Tuesday!

A Heads-Up for This Week's Learning...
1)  Student-Led Conferences - They'll be here before you know it!  We will be preparing and practicing so your parents can walk away feeling satisfied!

2) Book Club Novel Engineering Projects - WORK TIME ON TUESDAY!  You will have 2 major days of work on this project this week.  Be sure you have materials, ideas and teamwork skills to accomplish the idea you set out to make!

3)  Guidance This WEEK - Wednesday!

4)  SLEDDING Party!  Rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 18.  We will have to be adjusting our lunch time a bit, too, to get back in time for our Luther College Appear.in meeting.

5)  Kindergarten Buddies  - Thursday!

6)  Special Guest in Writing Class and D.A.R.E. class - Friday!

As you can see, our week is JAM-PACKED with learning and activities!  Let's keep our 5B reputation going on how we use our Cadet Pride at ALL TIMES!

Blog Proof!
We will be starting our day on Tuesday with NORMAL switches.  Get out everything you need.  THEN... here's the blog proof, ask me for your BLUE Conference Folder to start CUTTING OUT your Puzzle Pieces.  BE VERY, VERY, VERY Careful and Neat!!!!!

Nighty, Night!

More Great Growth!

We completed Math MAPs with the same effort as we started in Reading MAPs!  Love to see how hard EVERYONE worked!  I didn't see a single person RUSH through any part of either day of testing!  I think Nick (from the video we watched) would be SO PROUD of YOU!  I know I am!

Fun Passes... I counted them today at the end of the day AFTER I had to do some picture taking...
Here are the photos I took...

Umm... Oops... Maybe we forgot our Cadet Pride with clean up?
YIKES!

But these groups did a super job of remember to tidy up...
Both wheelie chair groups look like this!  Excellent!

So...Let's remember that EVEN if you're in a hurry, you have a responsibility to others to keep our SHARED space neat and organized!  Right-o?

So, our Fun Pass Bucket only ended up with 7 tickets by the end of the day.  Let's NOT let this happen again because you guys had A LOT of compliments today for me and from other teachers about your Cadet Pride!  Little "oops" turn into YIKES!

...TOMORROW...
...NO SLEDDING...

Ok... Here's the new deal.  Now the forecast shows some windchill happening tomorrow that will affect the day... UGH....  I'm SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SORRY!

NEW PLAN
Thursday, February 18!
*forecast is in the 30's for temperature*
(No BAND this day)

Blog Proof...
Come in and show me the EMOTION you feel based on our sledding news...
Happy?
Sad?
Disappointed?
Fine?
Relieved?
Or another feeling...

Again...SO SORRY... but I can't control Mother Nature!

AMAZING DAY! (with an oops in the hallway!)

Thanks for a GREAT day today, 5B!  I think having a full day of school is what we ALL NEEDED (maybe not wanted) to get into a routine and show our Cadet Pride back in motion!

Only blog proof tonight is getting your work or papers returned tomorrow....
1)  D.A.R.E. note
2) Conference note
3) Sledding note

Come on in and get your iPad out ready for Math MAPs test tomorrow.  I saw SUPER, DUPER Growth on your tests today!  No switching but we'll have more work to do!

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

We had ALL CLASSES TODAY!

Wowza!  That is AMAZING!  I'd have to say that EVERY group (WW, DT, F5) had super classes for writing, at least!  I'm putting in a Fun Pass for that!  With making our goal of 125, our next goal will probably feel pretty EASY!  Let's chat after our MAPs testing about a new goal and celebration!  Do we want gum-chewing to be our next goal?  Many of you seem to have it in most days anyway!  If we have a gum-chewing goal, then you won't have to keep spitting it out!  Up to you guys, though!

For reading class this afternoon, I saw some groups getting frustrated or overwhelmed with planning out their Novel Engineering ideas.  When you're stuck on something, "look for a new angle to think your way out of the problem".  Watch this video clip (Click Here) from Big Hero 6 to understand what I mean!

Here's another one from later on in the movie!  Click Here!

I always look to a good movie or book to help inspire my thinking!  I know your big brains can be creative and resourceful!

For WEDNESDAY...
**MAP's testing will be RIGHT AWAY.  So you can bring in your snacks.  We'll do attendance and lunch and get going!

**Conference Slips
**D.A.R.E Slips
**ANOTHER EPIC DAY of LEARNING!

Blog Proof....  Right when you come in, erase some space on the WHITE or GREEN walls, and WRITE a positive message for good luck or advice for the MAPs test!  We all need a little pep talk once and awhile!  Let's give it to each other!  Here's mine:

We DID IT!!!!!!!!!!

Woo - Hoo, 5B!  It was a LOT of work, effort and Cadet Pride shown, but
YOU DID IT!
I think our snow day activities helped quite a bit, but HEY,
you worked for the good of
the TEAM!

So PROUD!!

Now, let's hope the weather and our excitement for this celebration is under control, so we can go on with the plan for Friday, February 12th!  That's also our day to exchange Valentines if you are choosing to do so.  We also have a SUPER opportunity to connect with Country Winds Manor again that day for a "caring project!"  So, so much fun!!

As we have seen EVERY WEEK since Christmas break, we've had a messed up schedule.  I'm not even going to talk about what may happen the rest of week!

REMINDERS....
Be sure families this this reminder, too, please:)
Thanks to families who have already signed up for conferences!  Remember that these are STUDENT-LED conferences where you MUST be present!  Also, when parents are signing up online, you can come a bit before or after the time slot you have signed up for.

HOWEVER....
be sure you share this part again with your families....
You should be aware of the HOUR you are signing up within.  We want to keep it flexible, but it is important that our classroom does not get too filled up.  Privacy and level of comfort is important.

EXAMPLE BELOW:
Conference:  Monday at 6:10.
You can come anywhere between 6:00 - 7:00 that night.  Too much earlier or later will crowd the room.  We are only hoping that up to 3-4 conferences are going on at one time.  I want to be able to visit with your family as well.

More REMINDERS....

Book Club Materials!  If your group is depending on you to bring some items for your Novel Engineer design plan, don't let them down.  Tomorrow is a WORK, BUILD, and first DRAFT day for your project!

Blog Proof!  Check out this link!  When you come in on Tuesday, tell me WHICH TEAM was winning at the END of the video clip you saw!  What was the WINNING TEAM's SCORE at that time?

See you tomorrow??

Let's Go, Broncos!

This video may not load for some of you.  No biggie!  It's just
Isaiah saying, "Go Broncos" as that little football dude is dancing
and singing!
Well, IF we can get past the blizzard warning that is in effect for Sunday night through Monday morning, we MIGHT have a normal week of weather :~\  Check out the message from the National Weather Service below!

So, we'll have to just wait and see if that comes our way!
UGH!!!  Why can't things just be normal?

I stopped in at school today (Sunday), and apparently Darren the D.A.R.E. Lion had been putting on a fashion show while we were away this weekend.  I think that's his way of saying, "I like dressing up!  Bring in clothes and items for me!"  Well, you heard it from the Lion!  Remember to bring in something for him to wear!  We'll let him change a few times a day if you wish!

Let's start off the week with some great Cadet Pride with these reminders...
1)  Dream Team and Wonderful Wackos has MATH HOMEWORK!  Git 'er Done!
2)  Book Club reading (for some kids)
3)  Be ready for MAPs testing both Wednesday and Thursday!

Here's the EXCITING news!  We have 2 extra activities to PLAN for this week!
1)  Kindergarten buddies want to meet this week again!  Hooray for little buddies!
2)  We need to round up some SLEDS and volunteers for THIS FRIDAY afternoon, February 12th!  We are at 121 Fun Passes as of last Friday's lock in!  You think we'll make it by Friday?  Do we have 2-3 parents that are free and willing to hang out with us for an hour or so of sledding?  PLEASE have your parent CALL, TEXT or EMAIL me to arrange this.  Also... who would be able to have sleds dropped off and brought to East Park?
Day:  Friday, Feb. 12
Time - 12:50 - 2:05
Blog Proof! Go to the TodaysMeet Link (click here) and share your reaction to BOTH special events we will attempt this week!

First Day Back... Not Too Shabby!

Wowsa!  You REALLY need to thank your 5B classmates that put in the EXTRA EFFORT of all those blog activities!  They deserve a super, duper Hoot -n-Holler!
There were 70 Fun Passes in the container today after school! THAT's CRAZY!!!!!  So, you have 35 that got "locked in" the golden bucket today after school!  Ashton will have to be sure to count the the Fun Passes on Friday!

I'm thinking we'll be on that hill at East Park before we even realize it!

Today's chat with Luther definitely was a learning experience for us using Appear.in.  We NOW know that it's better to use different email addresses, right?!  The rest of the people made some good progress with ideas for stories! Check out the last photo of ideas!  Funny!
Britain, Brian and Erika from Luther

Camden, Kalob and Clara from Luther

Joey and Olivia from Luther

Sawyer, Daniel and Andrea from Luther

Remember...
1)  CONFERENCE SIGN UP! - Online with YOU LEADING the CONFERENCE!

2)  D.A.R.E.  - 1st class tomorrow!  Let's make a good first impression

3)  Boxtops, Milk Moola and other coupons for CONTEST!  Last DAY!!

4)  Last 2 Coffee Talks Friday- Moose Tracks and Everest!  Woo-hoo!

5)  NEXT WEEK - MAP's test and Valentine's Day Activities

Blog Checkers!
Come in Friday morning.  Get out ALL of your materials for switching out right away.  Then come tell me that you are ready for switching at 8:30!  This is 10 minutes earlier than a regular day!  We'll have to get going right away!

2 Days in a Row of Snow Days!

Wowza!  I kinda thought this would happen, but you just never know!  Yesterday's "connections" with the class totaled up to this:

15 people on TodaysMeet
12 people voted/got on Dotstorming
6 people read a Choose Your Own Adventure with TodaysMeet
7 people added to Padlet
and
4 people tried or got on the Appear.in video link-didn't work very well :(

You can count that up and see how many FUN PASSES were earned on Tuesday's Snow Day!

Now... Can we get MORE today?  I'd love EVEN MORE of our 5B classmates to participate!  If there is anyway to get ahold of your friends/classmates to jump on any of the online connections, PLEASE TRY!

Here are Wednesday's Options!

Option #1:
Need to get on TodaysMeet at 2 Different Times during the day!  Each time it needs to be about SOMETHING you READ!  So, it could be an ad in the Cresco Shopper, read to self book, a recipe, that Choose Your Own Adventure link from yesterday's post, etc. ANYTHING you read!  Then chat about it briefly!

Option #2:
Another Dotstorming Vote Page.  This time YOU need to offer a suggestion on your FAVORITE BOOK of ALL TIME.  It CAN NOT be the same as somebody else's!  (even if you love that book)
(Not seem to be working as I set it up, but you can check back throughout the day to see if I've gotten it fixed)

Option #3:
Padlet for pictures!  Don't forget your NAME!  Somebody wrote about forgetting eggs, but I don't know WHO you were!

Option #4:
Padlet for short stories!  On THIS Padlet, I'd love to see a short story using THESE story elements:

Protagonist (boy or girl)
Antagonist (weather or person)
Setting - Snow Day, Blizzard, near Cresco, Iowa

Write it in a Padlet!  I can't wait to see how creative you get!

REALLY hope to see you THURSDAY!!!!  Miss you!

Tuesday, February 2, 2016
